Chapter 15: Full Circle

Five years after that rainy Thursday night, I stood in the audience while Lily accepted an award for a story she had written about campus safety reforms.

When she finished speaking, she looked out at the crowd and said,

“My father taught me that some battles are worth fighting even when they seem impossible. He taught me that silence protects the guilty and that truth, no matter how painful, is always worth telling.”

Later that night, we had dinner together.

Just the two of us.

She raised her glass.

“To surviving,” she said.

I raised mine.

“To never staying silent again.”

We clinked glasses.

Outside, it started to rain.

But inside, everything felt warm.

Safe.

Whole.

The night I almost lost my daughter became the night I found out exactly how far I would go to protect her.

And I would do it all over again.

Without hesitation.

End of story.
