Chapter 5: The First Confrontation

I went straight to the athletic department.

The coach was polite at first. Then I mentioned Ryan’s name and Lily’s attack.

His face changed.

“I don’t know anything about that,” he said quickly. “You should talk to campus security.”

“I already did. They’re not very helpful.”

The coach stood up.

“I think you should leave.”

I didn’t move.

“My daughter is in the hospital with six broken bones in her face because someone beat her. If one of your players had anything to do with it, I’m going to find out. And when I do, I’m going to make sure everyone knows exactly what kind of program you’re running here.”

The coach’s jaw tightened.

“You’re making a mistake, Mr. Mercer.”

“I’ve made plenty,” I said. “But protecting my daughter isn’t one of them.”

I walked out before he could call security.
