Chapter 2: The First Wall

I spent the night in the chair beside Lily’s bed.
She couldn’t speak. The surgeries to repair her jaw would come in stages, starting the next morning. For now, she could only communicate with her eyes and the slight movement of her fingers.
Every time I looked at her, the rage inside me grew colder and sharper.
At 6:00 a.m., I stepped into the hallway and called the university’s campus security office.
A tired-sounding man answered.
“Bradley University Security.”
“This is Daniel Mercer. My daughter Lily was attacked last night near the science building. I want to know what you have.”
There was a pause.
“Sir, we’re still investigating. We’ve already spoken with the police.”
“I want to see the security footage.”

Another pause.
“I’m afraid that’s not something we can release to the public.”
“I’m not the public. I’m her father.”
“I understand, sir. But our policy is to work through official channels. The police are handling the investigation.”
I gripped the phone tighter.
“You found her unconscious. You have cameras all over that campus. And you’re telling me you have nothing?”
“We’re still reviewing everything, sir.”
I hung up.
Something was wrong.
I could feel it in my bones—the same instinct that had kept me alive in combat zones.
