Chapter 4: The Footage That Didn’t Exist

By the end of the second day, I had spoken with the Peoria police, the university president’s office, and three different campus security supervisors.
Every single one of them gave me the same answers.
“We’re doing everything we can.”
“The investigation is ongoing.”
“There is no clear footage of the attack.”
I didn’t believe them.
So I did what I had been trained to do.
I started my own investigation.
I walked the path where Lily had been found. I spoke to students who had been in the area that night. Most were helpful but scared. One girl finally told me something useful.
“I saw Lily arguing with someone near the science building around 9:30,” she said quietly. “A guy. Tall. He looked angry. I didn’t hear what they were saying, but she kept shaking her head.”
“Did you recognize him?”
The girl hesitated.
“He’s on the football team. I think his name is Ryan something. Everyone knows him because his dad is a big donor.”
I wrote the name down.
Ryan.

Son of a major donor.
That explained a lot.
