Chapter 21: The War for the Valley
Naomi and Jae-min drove down to the northern valley immediately. The air was crisp, filled with the scent of damp earth and early pine, but the peaceful horizon was marred by heavy construction vehicles clearing the adjacent plots purchased by Nova Harvest.
The local farmers gathered at the community center, their faces weathered with anxiety. An old farmer, Min-ho, who had known Samuel Brooks, stepped forward.
"They offered us triple the market value for our ancestral lands, Naomi," Min-ho said, his voice shaking. "Most of us refused, but some of the older families who have no heirs to take over the farms sold their plots. Now, Nova Harvest is setting up industrial-scale hog farms right next to our organic vegetable fields. The waste runoff will destroy our soil within a year."
Naomi stood before the community, feeling the heavy weight of their trust. She remembered her father’s words: A kitchen is only as strong as the earth beneath it.

"Don't sign anything else," Naomi told them, her voice carrying an absolute certainty that quieted the room. "They want an industrial war in this valley. We will give them an ecological fortress."
Jae-min stepped forward, pulling up a legal document on his tablet. "We are filing an immediate environmental injunction based on the Protected Watershed Act of 2024. Furthermore, the Kang Group is matching any corporate offer for the remaining land—not to build factories, but to place the entire valley under a permanent agricultural land trust managed by the farmers themselves."
