Chapter 9: The Shadows of the Legacy

Chapter 9: The Shadows of the Legacy
The opening night of the Brooks-Kang Culinary Safety Foundation drew to a close with resounding applause, but Naomi knew all too well that the ashes of an empire do not cool overnight. As the last guests departed the warm, brightly lit kitchen, a heavy silence reclaimed the room.
Jae-min stood by the expansive window, his tall silhouette reflecting against the glass overlooking the glittering city center. He handed her a warm mug of barley tea, its heat seeping into the palms of Naomi’s calloused, scarred hands.
"Helen’s lawyers just filed an appeal," Jae-min broke the silence, his deep voice carrying no surprise, only sharp vigilance. "She is trying to claim that Samuel Brooks’s video tapes were digitally manipulated. At the same time, the old loyal shareholders of the Park Group are quietly buying up shares on the black market."
Naomi took a slow sip of the tea, the mild bitterness blending with a sweet aftertaste on her tongue. She didn't flinch.
"Helen Park may control the numbers and the judges she bought over the last thirty years," Naomi said, her eyes fixed on the city lights. "But she cannot control the chefs she once looked down upon. The Park import network collapsed because they poisoned the one thing money can't buy: trust."
The next morning, the Foundation’s first true trial arrived. Audrey Park walked into the executive office, her face completely pale. In her hands was a new stack of documents, anonymously sent to her personal inbox at midnight.
Traces of the Underground Network
Audrey placed the documents on the table before Naomi and Jae-min. It was a list of hidden cold-storage warehouses located along the northern border—places that had never appeared in the financial reports Raymond or Helen submitted to the court.
Locations: Four secret warehouses in the sub-harbor zones of the northern maritime port.
Legal Status: Registered under shell companies established by Daniel Cho prior to his arrest.
Inventory: Hundreds of tons of uninspected spices and raw ingredients, bearing clear signs of erased expiration dates to prepare for distribution under a completely new, unbranded label.
"Vivian wasn't just trying to liquidate cash," Audrey said, her voice trembling. "She and Helen had a backup network ready. If the Park Group fell, they were going to use these contaminated ingredients to fund a new exclusive supply chain in Asia. They want to starve out the independent restaurants that refuse to submit to them."

Naomi stood up, tying her white apron firmly around her waist. Her eyes flared with the unyielding determination of someone who had walked the fine line between life and death. She looked at Jae-min.
"We can't just wait for the court to sort this out," she said. "It's time to use the voice of the culinary world."
