Chapter 11: The Gates of Hamptons

The morning sun reflected brilliantly off the chrome grill of my Honda CR-V as I turned off the main coastal highway and approached the grand wrought-iron gates of the Hamptons estate. For as long as I could remember, these gates had represented a fortress of exclusion—a place where my mother, Victoria, ruled like an absolute monarch, deciding who was worthy of her company and who was relegated to the shadows.

Now, as I pulled up to the security keypad, a small digital screen flashed green.
Access Granted: Primary Trustee Arya Montgomery.
The heavy iron doors swung open smoothly, sliding into the manicured hedges with a faint, hydraulic hum. I gripped the steering wheel, took a deep breath of the salty ocean air, and drove down the long, tree-lined drive.
Grandma Eleanor’s Maybach was already parked in the circular cobblestone courtyard, alongside a sleek black SUV carrying Michael Levin and his senior legal associates. When I cut the engine and stepped out, the silence of the coast enveloped me—broken only by the distant, rhythmic crashing of the Atlantic waves against the private cliffs behind the main house.
Eleanor stepped out onto the wide wraparound porch, leaning lightly on her cane, wearing a cream-colored cashmere cardigan that caught the ocean breeze.
"Welcome home, Arya," Eleanor called out, a warm, genuine smile gracing her lips.
"It feels unreal," I admitted, walking up the broad stone steps and looking out over the sprawling estate. "For years, I only came here when I was invited—or more accurately, when I was needed to help set up one of Mom's high-society fundraisers."
"Well, you aren't setting up anything today except your own peace of mind," Michael Levin said, walking out through the double oak doors with a stack of property transfer folders in his arms. "And speaking of your mother, we have our first administrative challenge."
I turned to look at him, my eyebrows raising. "What kind of challenge?"
"Victoria has filed an emergency motion through her personal attorney attempting to freeze the transfer of the guest house, claiming it was designated as her 'lifetime personal domicile' under an old verbal addendum," Michael explained, adjusting his glasses. "It's legally baseless, but it means she’s trying to drag out the transition."
Eleanor let out a sharp, dry laugh. "A verbal addendum? Victoria wouldn't know a verbal addendum from a grocery list unless it benefited her bank account. Michael, draft a counter-motion notifying her that if she contests the transfer of the guest house, we will immediately unseal the 2022 financial audit regarding her unauthorized withdrawals from the capital reserve."

"Consider it done," Michael nodded, turning back toward the interior study.
Eleanor walked over, placed her fragile, cool hand over mine, and looked deep into my eyes. "She’s fighting back the only way she knows how, Arya—by creating noise. But noise doesn’t hold up in a court of law. Let her scream into the wind. We have work to do."
