Chapter 14: The Threshold of Exposure

The television reporter, spotting movement at the grand entrance, immediately nudged the cameraman. The heavy professional rig swung around, zooming in directly on my face as I stood framed in the open oak doorway of the Hamptons estate.
"Look, she's coming out!" the reporter announced into his wireless mic, walking quickly toward the inner perimeter fence while signaling for Victoria to follow. "Miss Montgomery! Miss Montgomery! Over here! Your mother claims you used undue influence to strip her of her family legacy and estate! Do you have any response to these allegations of elder manipulation?"
I didn't flinch. I didn't rush forward, nor did I retreat inside. I simply raised my voice so it carried clearly across the quiet morning courtyard, amplified by the natural acoustics of the stone facade.
"There is no manipulation here," I said, my voice steady, cool, and carrying absolute authority. "There is only accountability."
Victoria pushed past the reporter, marching right up to the iron security gate, pressing her face against the bars like an inmate peering out from a cell.
"Arya! Open this gate right now!" Victoria shrieked, her carefully constructed mask of victimhood slipping instantly to reveal the hysterical rage underneath. "You ungrateful, treacherous little thief! How dare you steal my home? How dare you throw me out on the street after everything I sacrificed for you?"
"You weren't thrown out, Mom—you were legally removed for corporate breach of fiduciary duty and unauthorized asset seizure," I replied, my tone so detached and clinical it felt like a physical slap to her face. "And as for this property, it was purchased through the Montgomery Family Trust, registered under federal guidelines that you yourself signed as co-trustee three years ago."
The reporter scrambled closer, thrusting the microphone through the gaps in the iron bars. "Mrs. Montgomery, your daughter is mentioning federal trust guidelines. Are you stating that you were unaware of the legal ownership structure of this estate?"
Victoria glared at the reporter, suddenly realizing she was walking into a trap of her own making. "It... it was a family arrangement! A technicality! My mother manipulated the paperwork while I was grieving!"
"Grieving what?" a sharp, icy voice echoed from behind me.
Grandma Eleanor rolled her wheelchair out through the open double doors, positioning herself right beside me in the doorway. Her presence commanded the entire space, instantly drawing the camera's focus away from Victoria and onto the true matriarch of the family.
"Victoria," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a register of pure, unadulterated ice that made even the reporter take a half-step back. "If you do not remove yourself and your hired clowns from my private property in the next sixty seconds, I will instruct my attorneys to publicly release the internal audit detailing how you embezzled four hundred thousand dollars from the grandchildren's capital account to fund Richard’s failed resort venture in 2022."
The color drained entirely from Victoria’s face. The hysterical anger evaporated, replaced by a sudden, terrifying panic.

She looked at the camera rolling live just feet away, then at Eleanor, and finally at me.
Without saying another word, Victoria turned on her heel, pushed past the bewildered reporter, and slammed herself into the back of her sedan. The driver didn't wait for instructions; he threw the car into reverse, spun around on the gravel, and sped away down the coastal road, leaving the camera crew standing alone in front of the iron gates.
