Chapter 30: The Open Road Ahead

The next morning, the sun broke through the winter clouds, bathing Manhattan in a brilliant, dazzling display of golden light.
I walked down to the subterranean parking garage beneath my apartment building, stepping onto the smooth concrete floor until I reached my navy blue Honda CR-V.
The car was spotless, gleaming under the fluorescent garage lights. Not a single scratch remained on its bumper. The interior smelled of fresh leather and clean air.
I unlocked the doors with a soft beep, climbed into the driver’s seat, and slid my key into the ignition.
I turned the key. The engine hummed smoothly to life—quiet, powerful, and entirely reliable.
I shifted the gear into drive, tapped the accelerator, and drove up the concrete ramp, emerging out into the bright, blinding light of the New York morning.

As I merged onto the highway heading north toward the coast, I looked at my reflection in the rearview mirror. My eyes were bright, my posture was upright, and a calm, genuine smile rested on my lips.
