Chapter 12 - The Gala

Solmere’s annual Founders Gala had been scheduled for months.

Adrian wanted it canceled.

Charlotte refused.

The event would bring together investors, board members, politicians, hotel partners, and every major donor connected to Solmere Holdings.

Exactly the people Adrian had spent years trying to control.

Charlotte intended to use the room.

Vivienne had once dragged her across the lobby in a tank top.

Three nights later, Charlotte returned wearing her mother’s midnight-blue gown.

Not because she needed luxury to prove who she was.

Because Eleanor had worn the same dress when Solmere opened its first international property.

Charlotte wanted everyone to remember whose company this had been.

When she entered the ballroom, conversation stopped.

Adrian stood near the stage.

Lucien Laurent avoided her eyes.

Simon Graves had not appeared.

Federal investigators were positioned discreetly among the guests.

Charlotte took the microphone.

“Some of you saw a video this week.”

The room grew quiet.

“A woman was dragged across the lobby downstairs because people assumed her clothes told them what she was worth.”

Charlotte paused.

“The woman was me.”

Several guests lowered their eyes.

“But what happened in that lobby was not simply arrogance.”

“It was a plan.”

A giant screen illuminated behind her.

Security footage showed Adrian and Vivienne speaking before the confrontation.

Whispers spread.

Charlotte continued.

“My identity was known.”

“The humiliation was staged to provoke me.”

“False medical records were prepared to remove my voting rights.”

Then financial charts appeared.

“Forty-three million dollars moved through hidden Solmere accounts.”

Lucien stood.

“This is not the place.”

Charlotte looked directly at him.

“This is exactly the place.”

He sat down.

She displayed Eleanor’s ledger.

“My mother discovered the theft.”

“She died before she could expose it.”

The ballroom became absolutely silent.

Adrian walked toward the stage.

“Be careful, Charlotte.”

She looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because allegations about a dead woman cannot defend themselves.”

Charlotte’s expression hardened.

“My mother left records.”

“She left witnesses.”

“And unlike you, she left a trail that makes sense.”

Then the ballroom doors opened.

Melissa Ward entered with investigators.

Elias Grant followed.

Vivienne entered behind them.

Her father stared at her in disbelief.

Charlotte looked at Adrian.

“Everyone you frightened is here.”

Adrian’s control finally broke.

“You think they can destroy me?”

“No.”

Charlotte answered.

“I think you already did that yourself.”

Then an investigator approached Daniel and whispered something.

Daniel’s face changed.

He walked to Charlotte.

“They found Simon Graves.”

“Where?”

“At O’Hare.”

“He was trying to board a flight to Switzerland.”

Charlotte looked toward Adrian.

He was no longer watching the stage.

He was watching the exits.
