Chapter 8 - The Secret Clause

The emergency board meeting began at 8:03 a.m.
Charlotte sat in Eleanor’s old chair.
Adrian sat across from her.
Lucien Laurent sat beside his daughter.
Simon Graves entered carrying a black legal folder.
Charlotte immediately knew Vivienne had been telling the truth about one thing.
They had prepared something.
Simon opened the meeting.
“Before Ms. Vale attempts to exercise controlling authority, the board must review a succession issue.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“What issue?”
Simon removed a document.
Eleanor’s trust contained a private lineage clause.
If Charlotte was proven not to be Eleanor’s biological daughter, her controlling shares would pass into a family foundation overseen by the board.
Charlotte stared at him.
“That’s absurd.”
Simon placed a birth certificate on the table.
Then hospital records.
According to the documents, Eleanor Vale had suffered complications that made pregnancy medically impossible two years before Charlotte was born.
Vivienne watched Charlotte closely.
Lucien folded his hands.
Simon continued.
“We believe Charlotte Vale was adopted privately.”
The room erupted.
Charlotte felt the blood leave her face.
She remembered whispers from childhood.
People saying she did not resemble Eleanor.
She had always dismissed them.
Daniel asked.
“Where did these records come from?”
“Eleanor’s private physician.”
“Who is dead.”
“Yes.”
Charlotte looked at Simon.
“You expect me to believe my mother built an empire for me and secretly wrote a clause designed to take it away?”
Simon smiled.
“I expect the board to follow the trust.”
Charlotte opened Eleanor’s ledger.
Then she stopped.
One notation near the beginning suddenly mattered.
Simon asked for maternal records again.
Charlotte closed the ledger.
“No.”
Adrian leaned forward.
“What?”
“No vote.”
“You cannot stop the board.”
“I can when the documents are fraudulent.”
Simon’s smile faded.
Charlotte looked toward Daniel.
“Call St. Augustine Hospital.”
“That’s where I was born.”
Simon scoffed.
“The hospital closed years ago.”
“The maternity wing did.”
Charlotte remembered something Eleanor had told her when she was sixteen.
Never trust a copy when the original still exists.
The phrase echoed Eleanor’s message from Room 1816.
Charlotte had always assumed it was advice about contracts.
Now she understood.
She called the hospital archive herself.
An administrator answered.
Charlotte provided the record number on Simon’s birth certificate.
There was a pause.
Then the administrator said.
“That number belongs to a male child born in 1989.”
The room went silent.
Charlotte was born in 1992.
Daniel slowly looked toward Simon.
The administrator continued.
“We do have a Charlotte Eleanor Vale.”
“Would you like the original record released under subpoena?”
Charlotte smiled.
“Yes.”
Then she looked across the table.
“Very much.”
Simon’s face had gone white.
Vivienne turned toward her father.
“You said those documents were real.”
Lucien whispered.
“Be quiet.”
May you like
Charlotte heard him.
The conspiracy was beginning to split.
