One year after Charlotte was dragged across the Solmere lobby, the hotel looked almost unchanged.
The orchids remained.
The chandeliers remained.
The marble still reflected everything above it.
But the company behind the beauty was different.
Elena Park remained chief executive.
Charlotte served as controlling chairwoman.
Two employee representatives sat on the Solmere board.
The hidden eighteenth floor became an internal archive and ethics center.
Room 1816 remained preserved.
Eleanor’s original ledger sat inside a glass case.
Not as decoration.
As a warning.
Rosa became director of guest and employee relations.
Elias Grant received a formal public apology and a pension settlement.
Melissa Ward helped create a medical advocacy fund for hospitality workers.
Several employees wrongfully terminated during Adrian’s administration were offered reinstatement or compensation.
Solmere’s stock initially fell.
Then recovered.
Guests returned.
Investors adjusted.
The empire did not collapse because the truth came out.
It changed.
Charlotte rarely wore expensive gowns.
She still preferred jeans when she was working.
Some executives found that unsettling.
She enjoyed that.
One afternoon, a new front-desk employee stopped Charlotte near the elevators.
“Excuse me, ma’am.”
Charlotte turned.
“You need an executive pass for that floor.”
Rosa watched from across the lobby, horrified.
Charlotte smiled.
“You’re right.”
She pulled out her identification.
The employee examined it.
His face changed.
“Oh.”
Charlotte laughed.
“You did exactly what you were supposed to do.”
Relief replaced panic.
Afterward, Rosa approached.
“You almost gave me a heart attack.”
Charlotte looked around the lobby.
“No one should be afraid to tell the owner no.”
Rosa smiled.
“Your mother would like that.”
Charlotte looked toward Eleanor’s portrait near the staircase.
“I hope so.”
Then the revolving doors opened.
A woman entered wearing a plain gray dress.
