Chapter 17 - Eleanor Vale’s Real Legacy

Three months after Charlotte returned, prosecutors announced formal charges against Adrian Mercer, Simon Graves, Lucien Laurent, and several financial intermediaries.

Adrian faced the most serious charges connected to Eleanor’s death.

Investigators concluded Eleanor’s collapse was caused by an unlawful sedative administered without her knowledge.

The delayed emergency response significantly reduced her chance of survival.

Malcolm Price’s injection complicated her condition further.

Charlotte read the report alone.

There was no dramatic murder weapon.

No masked stranger.

No single cinematic moment.

Her mother died because arrogant people believed they had the right to control her.

Then they lied to protect themselves.

That truth hurt more than Charlotte expected.

Daniel entered quietly.

“There’s something else.”

He carried a small video recorder found in Eleanor’s private estate storage.

The recording had been made five days before her death.

Charlotte pressed play.

Eleanor appeared on screen.

She looked tired.

But alive.

“Charlotte.”

Her daughter covered her mouth.

“If you are watching this, then I probably failed to tell you something while I still had time.”

Eleanor smiled sadly.

“I spent too much of my life teaching you how to survive wealthy rooms.”

“How to dress.”

“How to speak.”

“How to recognize people who smiled while calculating your value.”

Charlotte began crying.

Eleanor continued.

“But I did not teach you the most important thing.”

“Ownership means nothing if the people beneath your roof are afraid to speak.”

Charlotte looked toward the hotel floor outside her office.

“I thought Solmere was our family legacy.”

“I was wrong.”

“The legacy is whether people are safer because we were here.”

Eleanor paused.

“If Solmere survives, make it worthy of surviving.”

The recording ended.

Charlotte sat silently for a long time.

Then she called Elena Park.

“I want to change the foundation charter.”

Elena asked.

“How?”

Charlotte looked at her mother’s frozen image.

“Employee representation on the board.”

“Independent ethics oversight.”

“Hospitality scholarships.”

“Legal assistance for workers facing retaliation.”

Elena laughed softly.

“Some investors will hate that.”

Charlotte wiped her tears.

May you like

“Good.”

“Then they’ll know we mean it.”
