Chapter 2 - The Owner Who Was Supposed to Be Gone

Within ten minutes, the Solmere Hotel had become a fortress.

Daniel ordered hotel security to close the executive floor.

The independent auditors secured the financial office.

Charlotte instructed staff not to delete a single email, camera recording, invoice, or access log.

Vivienne stood beside the concierge desk in stunned silence.

Then the executive elevator opened.

Adrian Mercer stepped out.

At fifty-two, Adrian had spent fifteen years as Eleanor Vale’s chief operating officer.

After Eleanor’s death, he became interim chief executive of Solmere Holdings.

He had also spent the last four months telling the board that Charlotte was emotionally unstable and possibly missing.

Now she was standing in front of him.

His expression barely changed.

“Charlotte.”

She watched him carefully.

“You don’t look surprised.”

Adrian smiled.

“I always hoped you would come home.”

“That isn’t what your board reports say.”

A shadow moved behind his eyes.

Vivienne hurried toward him.

“Adrian, she says she owns the hotel.”

“She does.”

Vivienne stopped.

Adrian continued.

“At least technically.”

Charlotte almost laughed.

“There it is.”

Daniel stepped beside her.

“What exactly does technically mean?”

Adrian adjusted his cuffs.

“It means ownership and operational control are not the same thing.”

He explained that after Eleanor’s sudden death, Solmere’s emergency succession committee had suspended Charlotte’s voting authority.

The board claimed Charlotte had become unreachable.

Then medical records appeared suggesting she had suffered a severe psychological breakdown after her mother’s death.

Charlotte stared at him.

“You declared me incompetent without ever speaking to me.”

“The board acted to protect the company.”

“From its owner?”

“From instability.”

Charlotte took another step.

“Whose doctor signed the report?”

Adrian hesitated.

Daniel noticed.

“Answer her.”

“Dr. Malcolm Price.”

Charlotte smiled for the first time.

Adrian’s expression tightened.

“What?”

“Malcolm Price lost his medical license eleven months before he supposedly examined me.”

The lobby erupted in whispers.

Adrian’s face hardened.

Charlotte continued.

“And I have never met him.”

Vivienne looked at Adrian.

“You told me she was unstable.”

Charlotte turned.

“So you did know who I was.”

Vivienne realized what she had admitted.

“I knew a woman named Charlotte Vale existed.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Charlotte looked toward the ceiling.

A security camera pointed directly at the lobby.

“Fortunately, we can review everything you said before you started dragging me.”

Vivienne’s confidence finally cracked.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Charlotte, this is becoming unnecessarily theatrical.”

She stared at him.

“You forged medical records.”

“My mother died.”

“My voting rights disappeared.”

“And forty-three million dollars left Solmere accounts.”

She lowered her voice.

“I think we passed theatrical several felonies ago.”

Daniel handed Adrian a formal notice.

“Effective immediately, all executive financial authority is frozen pending an emergency ownership review.”

Adrian read the first page.

“You cannot do this.”

Charlotte answered.

“I just did.”

His eyes lifted to hers.

For the first time, there was no polite executive mask.

Only anger.

Then he said something that confirmed Charlotte’s worst fear.

“Your mother should have explained how dangerous this company could become.”

Charlotte went still.

Adrian realized his mistake.

Daniel looked sharply at him.

Charlotte spoke quietly.

“She tried.”

She reached into her pocket.

May you like

“She left me a message twelve hours before she died.”

Adrian’s face lost its color.
