Chapter 10 - VIVI’S CONFESSION

The interrogation lasted eleven hours.
Vivi admitted everything.
She admitted knowing Elena had not surrendered Noah.
She admitted helping fabricate psychiatric reports.
She admitted paying a social worker.
She admitted blocking Elena’s emails.
She admitted using the quiet room.
She admitted telling Noah that Elena was dead.
But one question remained.
“Who ordered Noah taken from Elena’s apartment?”
Vivi stared at the table.
“My mother.”
“And who physically took him?”
“Malcolm.”
“Were you there?”
Vivi began crying.
“Yes.”
Elena watched through the observation window.
Her face went blank.
Vivi continued.
“Noah was sleeping.”
“I picked him up.”
“He woke up.”
“He started crying for Elena.”
“I almost put him back.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Almost?”
“My mother told me Elena would ruin him.”
“She told me this was my chance to be a mother again.”
“So you walked out.”
“Yes.”
“And Elena?”
“Malcolm injected her with something.”
Elena closed her eyes.
Adrian looked at her.
She did not cry.
Perhaps she had exhausted tears for that memory years ago.
Then Vivi said something unexpected.
“Elena woke up before we left.”
Elena’s eyes opened.
Vivi continued.
“She saw me holding Noah.”
“She tried to stand.”
“She begged me.”
Elena whispered through the glass.
“I remember.”
Vivi covered her face.
“She said, ‘Please don’t make him wonder why I left.’”
Elena finally broke.
Because that was exactly what had happened.
Noah had spent years believing his mother left.
Elena had spent years knowing he might believe it.
Vivi lowered her hands.
“I did it anyway.”
That confession became the centerpiece of the prosecution.
But Celeste still had one final weapon.
She claimed Adrian had known.
A signed document appeared.
Adrian Whitmore authorizing emergency placement of Noah.
His signature.
His corporate seal.
His assistant’s witness mark.
The media exploded.
ADRIAN WHITMORE IMPLICATED IN CHILD CUSTODY SCANDAL.
Elena looked at him.
“Did you sign it?”
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Then Adrian remembered something.
Six years earlier, his father had asked him to sign a stack of blank corporate authorization pages before leaving for London.
Adrian had done it.
Trusting him.
One of those pages had become Noah’s custody authorization.
Legally, the signature was his.
Morally, he had never known.
But proving that would be difficult.
The board suspended him.
Sponsors abandoned the foundation.
Reporters surrounded the mansion.
Adrian lost control of Whitmore Holdings within forty-eight hours.
Noah watched the television.
“Daddy?”
Adrian turned it off.
“Yeah?”
“Are you bad?”
The question hurt more than losing the company.
Adrian knelt.
“I made mistakes.”
“Did you take me from Mommy?”
“No.”
Noah looked toward Elena.
She came closer.
“Your dad didn’t take you from me.”
Noah thought about that.
Then hugged Adrian.
Outside, cameras flashed through the gates.
Inside, Adrian realized something.
Celeste wanted him distracted.
The corporate takeover was not merely revenge.
Someone was buying Whitmore shares while the price collapsed.
He checked the transactions.
Bellamy Capital.
Celeste was using the scandal she created to seize his company.
Adrian laughed.
Elena frowned.
“What?”
“She’s still doing it.”
“Doing what?”
“Turning children into leverage.”
He opened the trading report.
“But this time she made one mistake.”
May you like
“What?”
“She showed me exactly what she wants.”
