Chapter 12 - THE GRANDMOTHER’S PETITION

Adrian could barely believe it.

“You filed for custody?”

Margaret remained calm.

“Temporary protective custody.”

“Against whom?”

“All of you.”

Elena stood.

“Excuse me?”

Margaret looked at her.

“You’ve been hunted for six years.”

“That does not make me dangerous.”

“No.”

“But it makes Noah vulnerable.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“And me?”

“You’re surrounded by a collapsing empire.”

“He’s my son.”

“And you spent six years married to the woman who stole him.”

The words cut deeply.

Margaret continued.

“I lost you because I trusted the wrong system.”

“I will not lose my grandson because everyone is rushing toward an emotional reunion without thinking.”

Elena stared at her.

“You think I’m rushing?”

“I think you deserve your son.”

“But I also think Noah deserves stability.”

Elena’s voice shook.

“I am his stability.”

“You were.”

The cruelty of the sentence silenced the room.

Adrian immediately stepped between them.

“That’s enough.”

Margaret’s expression softened.

“I’m not your enemy.”

“Then withdraw the petition.”

“No.”

The custody hearing was scheduled for the next morning.

Media descended on the courthouse.

Elena sat beside her attorney.

Adrian sat behind her.

Vivi was brought from detention to testify.

When asked who should raise Noah, everyone expected her to claim motherhood again.

She did not.

“Elena.”

The courtroom murmured.

The attorney frowned.

“You raised Noah for nearly six years.”

“Yes.”

“And you believe Elena Marlowe should have custody?”

Vivi looked at Elena.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Vivi swallowed.

“Because every day Noah lived with me was a day stolen from her.”

Elena looked down.

Vivi continued.

“I love him.”

“That is why I have to stop pretending love gives me ownership.”

The judge turned toward Noah’s therapist.

The therapist explained that Noah associated Elena with early safety memories.

He associated Adrian with stable paternal attachment.

And he associated Vivi with both affection and fear.

Then Noah himself asked to speak.

The judge allowed a private interview.

Later, the judge returned.

She looked at Margaret.

“Mrs. Whitmore, your concern is understandable.”

“But this court finds no evidence that removing Noah from both biological parents would serve his interests.”

Margaret’s petition was denied.

Elena closed her eyes.

Adrian squeezed her hand.

Then the judge continued.

“Temporary joint placement will be established between Ms. Marlowe and Mr. Whitmore while permanent arrangements are evaluated.”

Outside the courtroom, Margaret approached Elena.

“I’m sorry.”

Elena looked at her.

“For filing?”

“For saying you used to be his stability.”

Margaret’s eyes filled.

“I know what it is to have motherhood taken from you.”

“I should have known better.”

Elena nodded slowly.

Not forgiveness.

But a beginning.

Then a reporter shouted from the courthouse steps.

“Mr. Whitmore!”

Adrian turned.

“Is it true Celeste Bellamy has disappeared?”

Everyone froze.

Detective Sloan checked her phone.

Her face changed.

Celeste had removed her electronic monitor.

Her driver had been found unconscious.

And one hour earlier, a private jet registered to a Bellamy subsidiary had filed a flight plan.

Destination:

Switzerland.

But Celeste was not on the plane.

The aircraft was a distraction.

Then Adrian’s phone received a photograph.

Noah’s school.

Taken minutes earlier.

Beneath it:

YOU TOOK MY FAMILY.

I’LL TAKE YOURS.

Adrian looked at Sloan.

May you like

“Noah.”

They ran.
