Chapter 5 - ELENA’S SECRET

Adrian felt betrayal before he understood it.

“You knew who I was?”

“Yes.”

“Before Boston?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Elena closed her eyes.

“Because someone hired me.”

The words landed heavily.

Adrian stepped away.

“To do what?”

“Get close to you.”

“Who?”

“I didn’t know at first.”

“Don’t do that.”

Elena looked up.

“Do what?”

“Give me half the truth.”

“I’ve had enough half-truths for one lifetime.”

Elena nodded.

Then she told him everything.

Seven years earlier, she had been twenty-four and buried under medical bills from her younger sister’s illness.

A consulting firm offered her temporary work.

Attend a charity conference.

Meet Adrian Whitmore.

Learn whether he intended to support a merger between Whitmore Holdings and the Bellamy family’s investment group.

“That’s corporate espionage.”

“Yes.”

“Who hired the firm?”

“I found out later.”

“Vivi?”

“Her father.”

Adrian stared at her.

Elena had been planted near him.

But something unexpected happened.

They fell in love.

Not strategically.

Not conveniently.

Messily.

Quickly.

Honestly.

Elena quit the assignment after four days.

She refused the remaining payment.

Then she discovered she was pregnant.

Before she could tell Adrian, Malcolm visited her.

“He knew everything.”

Elena whispered.

“He showed me my sister’s hospital records.”

“He knew where she lived.”

“He knew where you were.”

“He told me if I contacted you, your father would destroy my sister and me.”

“So you disappeared.”

“I thought I was protecting everyone.”

“And Vivi?”

“She visited me months later.”

“She offered money.”

“How much?”

“Two million dollars.”

“For Noah?”

“For my silence.”

“You refused.”

“Yes.”

Adrian looked at Noah.

“And eleven months later they took him.”

Elena nodded.

“They drugged me.”

Adrian’s eyes sharpened.

“What?”

“I woke up in my apartment.”

“Noah was gone.”

“The police arrived twenty minutes later.”

“They found prescription drugs in my kitchen.”

“Drugs I had never seen.”

“They said I had endangered my child.”

“They arrested me.”

Adrian remembered the articles.

“They built the case before taking him.”

“Yes.”

“Then where did Noah go?”

“Into emergency foster placement.”

“And Vivi?”

“Applied for private guardianship almost immediately.”

Adrian felt nauseated.

A legal kidnapping disguised as child protection.

Every step documented.

Every lie stamped.

Every signature designed to look legitimate.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I tried.”

Elena pulled out her phone.

She opened a folder.

Hundreds of emails.

All sent to Adrian.

None received.

His old corporate address.

His personal address.

Messages spanning years.

ADRIAN, PLEASE READ THIS.

I THINK YOUR WIFE HAS MY SON.

NOAH IS YOUR CHILD.

PLEASE HELP ME.

Adrian stared.

“I never received these.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“Because one finally bounced back with an administrator log.”

She showed him.

A filtering rule had been placed on Adrian’s accounts.

Anything containing Elena’s name was automatically redirected.

The administrator was listed as V. Whitmore.

Adrian sat down.

For six years, Elena had been screaming into a wall Vivi controlled.

Then Noah walked into the room.

He had changed into pajamas.

He carried the small silver hospital bracelet.

“Daddy?”

Adrian looked up.

“Yeah, buddy?”

“Is Mommy staying?”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“If she wants to.”

Noah immediately smiled.

Elena turned away, fighting tears.

Noah climbed onto Adrian’s lap.

“Can we all stay?”

The question destroyed something inside him.

Adrian kissed his hair.

“We’re going to figure it out.”

Noah studied him.

“Is Vivi mad?”

Adrian hesitated.

“Noah.”

“Did she ever hurt you?”

The boy became quiet.

Elena looked over.

Noah shook his head.

Then stopped.

Adrian knew that movement.

A child reconsidering whether the truth was safe.

“You can tell me anything.”

Noah whispered.

“She had a room.”

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

“What room?”

“The quiet room.”

Elena came closer.

“What happened there?”

“When I talked about Mommy, I had to sit there.”

“For how long?”

Noah shrugged.

“Until I said I made it up.”

Adrian’s jaw clenched.

“Where was this room?”

“At Grandma Bellamy’s house.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

Vivi’s mother.

Celeste Bellamy.

One of the most influential philanthropists in New York.

A woman who chaired three child welfare organizations.

Adrian stood.

“We’re going there.”

The Bellamy mansion was empty when police arrived.

But the quiet room existed.

No windows.

A small chair.

A camera.

A speaker mounted in the ceiling.

On a shelf sat children’s books about false memories.

Detective Sloan stared around the room.

“This wasn’t discipline.”

“No.”

Adrian looked at the camera.

“It was conditioning.”

A technician recovered files from the recording system.

Most had been deleted.

One survived.

Noah at age four.

Sitting alone.

Crying.

Vivi’s voice came through the speaker.

“Who is Elena?”

Four-year-old Noah wiped his face.

“My mommy.”

The speaker clicked.

“No.”

“Again.”

“Who is Elena?”

Noah cried harder.

“My mommy.”

Hours later, another clip.

Noah looked exhausted.

“Who is Elena?”

He whispered.

“Nobody.”

Adrian turned away from the screen.

Elena was crying silently.

Detective Sloan stopped the video.

“We have enough for additional charges.”

Adrian stared at the blank monitor.

“No.”

Sloan frowned.

“No?”

“This is enough to charge Vivi.”

Adrian looked at the shelves.

“But it isn’t enough to explain Celeste.”

He turned toward the door.

“She built a career protecting children.”

“Why would she help do this to Noah?”

A voice answered from the hallway.

“Because Noah was never the real target.”

Everyone turned.

An elderly woman stood at the end of the corridor.

Silver hair.

Thin frame.

Dark coat.

Adrian stopped breathing.

He knew her face from the photograph.

“Mom?”

Margaret Whitmore looked at her son for the first time in thirty-three years.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Hello, Adrian.”

Then she looked toward Noah.

Her grandson.

And what she said next changed the investigation completely.

“They didn’t steal Noah because Vivi wanted a child.”

“They stole him because Charles discovered what Elena’s pregnancy could prove.”
