Chapter 6 - THE BLOODLINE SECRET

Margaret refused to speak inside the Bellamy house.

They returned to Whitmore House shortly before dawn.

Noah slept upstairs with Elena nearby.

Adrian sat across from the mother he had mourned for thirty-three years.

He did not know whether to hug her or interrogate her.

Margaret understood.

“You deserve answers.”

“Start with why Dad told me you were dead.”

“Because I discovered he wasn’t your biological father.”

Adrian stared at her.

The sentence seemed impossible.

Margaret continued.

“Charles was sterile.”

“He knew before we married.”

“But Whitmore Holdings required a direct heir.”

“So he arranged one.”

Adrian felt sick.

“Arranged?”

“Your biological father was a man named Samuel Marlowe.”

Elena, standing near the doorway, dropped her glass.

Adrian turned.

“Marlowe?”

Margaret nodded.

Elena whispered.

“That was my father’s name.”

Silence swallowed the room.

Adrian looked from Margaret to Elena.

“No.”

Margaret’s expression softened with horror.

“Not her father.”

“Samuel was her grandfather’s brother.”

Adrian exhaled.

But the implication remained enormous.

Elena and Adrian came from connected branches of the Marlowe family.

More importantly, Noah’s DNA could reveal that Adrian himself was not genetically related to Charles Whitmore.

“If anyone tested Noah against preserved Whitmore family samples…”

Margaret nodded.

“The truth about you could surface.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“So my father stole my son to protect the lie that I was his son.”

“Yes.”

“And Vivi helped.”

“She wanted the marriage.”

“She wanted the name.”

“She wanted Noah.”

Margaret paused.

“But Celeste Bellamy wanted something else.”

“What?”

“Control of Whitmore Holdings.”

Adrian understood immediately.

If his legitimacy as heir could be challenged, billions in trusts and voting rights could be contested.

The Bellamys had spent years positioning Vivi as the bridge between the two families.

Noah was not merely a child to them.

He was evidence.

And leverage.

Adrian leaned back.

“All of this because of money.”

Margaret shook her head.

“Money started it.”

“Fear sustained it.”

“And power made them believe they could continue forever.”

A phone rang upstairs.

Elena answered.

Seconds later, she came running down.

“Noah is gone.”

Adrian shot to his feet.

“What?”

“The window is open.”

They ran upstairs.

Noah’s bed was empty.

On the pillow lay his silver bracelet.

Adrian looked toward the window.

Then Elena noticed something.

“No.”

She pointed toward the closet.

The door moved.

Adrian opened it.

Noah was crouched inside.

He was shaking.

Adrian knelt.

“Buddy?”

Noah pressed one finger to his lips.

“Someone’s here.”

Every adult froze.

Adrian whispered.

“Who?”

Noah pointed toward the hallway.

“The lady from Grandma’s house.”

A sound came from downstairs.

Glass breaking.

Detective Sloan drew her weapon.

Officers moved through the mansion.

They found no intruder.

But the rear door was open.

And on the kitchen counter sat an envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Noah sleeping.

Taken less than ten minutes earlier.

On the back:

YOU CANNOT PROTECT HIM FOREVER.

Elena stared at it.

Adrian looked toward his mother.

Margaret’s face had gone pale.

“You recognize the handwriting.”

She nodded.

“Whose?”

May you like

Margaret whispered.

“Celeste Bellamy.”
