Chapter 3 - THE ROOM BEHIND THE BLUE DOOR

At 11:42 p.m., Adrian arrived at the old Whitmore estate.
He did not come alone.
Detectives surrounded the property from beyond the tree line.
Elena remained in an unmarked vehicle with Detective Mara Sloan.
Vivi was being questioned at police headquarters.
At least, that was where Adrian believed she was.
The estate had belonged to his father.
It had been empty since Charles Whitmore died three years earlier.
Adrian stepped inside.
Dust covered the entrance hall.
“Malcolm?”
Nothing.
He moved deeper into the house.
A light glowed beneath the basement door.
Adrian descended.
At the bottom stood a blue door.
He had never seen it before.
The lock had been recently replaced.
Adrian pushed it open.
Inside was a small room.
A child’s bed.
A table.
A lamp.
And dozens of photographs.
Elena.
Noah.
Adrian.
Photographs spanning six years.
Elena leaving apartments.
Elena entering law offices.
Elena speaking to journalists.
Elena outside Noah’s school.
Adrian’s stomach twisted.
She had been watched constantly.
Then he saw the newspaper clippings.
WOMAN ARRESTED AFTER DISTURBANCE AT PRIVATE ADOPTION OFFICE.
LOCAL WOMAN CHARGED WITH HARASSMENT.
FORMER HOSPITAL EMPLOYEE ACCUSED OF FRAUD.
Every article mentioned Elena Marlowe.
Adrian realized what had happened.
Someone had built a public record around her.
Not enough to imprison her permanently.
Enough to make her unbelievable.
A voice came from behind him.
“Your father always said you were slower than you looked.”
Adrian turned.
Malcolm Voss stood in the doorway.
“Where is Noah?”
“Safe.”
“If you hurt him—”
“I never hurt children.”
Adrian looked around.
“You stole one.”
Malcolm smiled without humor.
“I followed instructions.”
“Whose?”
“You already know.”
“Vivi?”
Malcolm laughed.
“You still think your wife was powerful enough to build all this?”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“My father.”
“Charles Whitmore protected the family name.”
“By stealing my child?”
“By preventing a scandal.”
Adrian stared at him.
“What scandal?”
Malcolm’s smile disappeared.
“Ask yourself why Elena never told you she was pregnant.”
Adrian said nothing.
“Then ask why your father knew before you did.”
The answer hit him.
“My father had her watched.”
“For years.”
“Why?”
“Because Elena Marlowe wasn’t supposed to meet you.”
Adrian frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Malcolm stepped closer.
“Your relationship with Vivi wasn’t romantic.”
“Not to your father.”
“It was a merger.”
“Whitmore money.”
“Bellamy political connections.”
“Two families becoming one.”
“Elena threatened that before the wedding invitations were even printed.”
Adrian felt sick.
“So he took Noah.”
Malcolm tilted his head.
“Not exactly.”
“Who did?”
Malcolm’s eyes moved toward the staircase.
A floorboard creaked upstairs.
Adrian turned.
Malcolm smiled.
“You should have come alone.”
The basement lights went dark.
Adrian heard footsteps.
Then a child cried upstairs.
“Daddy!”
Adrian ran.
He reached the main hall.
“Noah!”
A small figure stood at the top of the staircase.
“Noah!”
Adrian raced upward.
His son ran into his arms.
Adrian held him so tightly Noah protested.
“Daddy, I can’t breathe.”
Adrian loosened his grip.
“Are you hurt?”
Noah shook his head.
“Where’s Mommy?”
“Elena is outside.”
Noah clung tighter.
“The bad man said she would disappear again.”
“No one is disappearing.”
A voice came from the darkness.
“Are you sure?”
Adrian looked up.
Vivi stepped from the upstairs corridor.
Adrian stared at her.
“You’re supposed to be at police headquarters.”
“I left.”
“How?”
“You still underestimate my family.”
Noah buried his face against Adrian.
Vivi saw it.
Pain flashed across her expression.
“Come here, Noah.”
“No.”
“I’m your mother.”
“No.”
Vivi’s face tightened.
“I raised you.”
Noah began trembling.
Adrian noticed.
“What did you do to him?”
“Nothing.”
“Why is he afraid of you?”
“He’s confused.”
Noah whispered against Adrian’s shoulder.
“She said Mommy was dead.”
Adrian looked at Vivi.
Noah continued.
“She said if I talked about the moon song, Mommy would stay dead.”
Vivi closed her eyes.
Adrian’s voice became almost inaudible.
“You told him Elena was dead?”
“He was having nightmares.”
“You threatened a child with his mother’s death?”
“I was trying to protect him!”
“From remembering?”
Vivi’s composure broke.
“Yes!”
The word echoed through the house.
“Yes, Adrian!”
“Because he remembered too much!”
Adrian stared at her.
Vivi began crying.
“When he was three, he started talking about a woman singing.”
“At four, he described a hospital room.”
“At five, he drew her face.”
“I didn’t know how.”
“I didn’t understand.”
“Elena only held him for a few hours after birth.”
Adrian looked toward Malcolm.
Malcolm’s expression changed.
That detail mattered.
Adrian caught it.
“Elena held him longer than a few hours.”
Vivi went silent.
Adrian looked at Malcolm.
“How long?”
Malcolm said nothing.
“How long was Noah with Elena?”
Vivi whispered.
“Eleven months.”
Adrian felt as if someone had struck him.
“What?”
Noah had not been taken immediately after birth.
Vivi’s entire story collapsed again.
Elena had raised him.
Fed him.
Held him.
Sung to him.
For nearly a year.
Adrian stepped toward Vivi.
“You stole him when he was eleven months old.”
Vivi shook her head.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen that way.”
“How was it supposed to happen?”
“She was supposed to sign.”
“Sign what?”
“Custody.”
“And when she refused?”
Vivi looked at Malcolm.
Adrian understood.
“You took him.”
Malcolm spoke.
“Your father ordered the situation resolved.”
Adrian’s hands shook.
“Where was I?”
“London.”
Adrian remembered.
A six-month expansion project.
His father had insisted he personally oversee it.
Adrian had thought it was a test of leadership.
It had been an alibi.
He looked at Noah.
Eleven months old.
His son had already known Elena.
Already loved her.
Then one day she vanished.
No wonder some part of him remembered.
Adrian heard engines outside.
Police.
Vivi panicked.
“Malcolm.”
He looked at her.
“Do something.”
Malcolm smiled.
“No.”
Her face changed.
“What?”
“I worked for Charles.”
“He’s dead.”
“You paid me to clean up afterward.”
“But tonight?”
He shook his head.
“You’re on your own.”
Vivi stepped backward.
“You promised me.”
“I promised discretion.”
“You brought a child here!”
“At your request.”
Adrian froze.
He looked at Vivi.
“You ordered Noah brought here?”
“No.”
Malcolm laughed.
“Still lying.”
Vivi screamed.
“Shut up!”
Noah started crying.
Adrian covered his ears.
Malcolm reached inside his jacket.
Adrian tensed.
But Malcolm removed a flash drive.
“This is why she came.”
Vivi stared at it.
“What is that?”
“Insurance.”
Malcolm tossed it toward Adrian.
Adrian caught it.
“Six years of payments.”
“Hospital records.”
“Surveillance.”
“Instructions.”
“And recordings.”
Vivi lunged.
Adrian moved away.
She missed the drive.
Police burst through the front entrance.
“Hands where we can see them!”
Vivi stopped.
Malcolm calmly raised his hands.
Detective Sloan entered with Elena behind her.
The moment Noah saw Elena, he broke free.
“Mommy!”
Elena ran to him.
They collided in the middle of the staircase.
Elena sank to the floor.
Noah wrapped his arms around her neck.
Adrian watched them.
Then looked down at the flash drive.
Detective Sloan approached.
“What’s on it?”
Adrian answered quietly.
“The last six years of my family.”
Malcolm corrected him.
“No.”
Everyone looked at him.
Malcolm’s eyes settled on Adrian.
“It goes back much further than six years.”
“How far?”
“Twenty-nine.”
Adrian frowned.
Malcolm smiled grimly.
“You think Noah was the first child Charles Whitmore took from someone?”
The room became silent.
Adrian stared at him.
“What are you talking about?”
Malcolm nodded toward the flash drive.
“Open the folder labeled A.W.”
Adrian’s initials.
Adrian Whitmore.
His hand tightened around the drive.
“What’s in it?”
May you like
Malcolm looked him directly in the eyes.
“The reason your mother disappeared when you were five.”
