CHAPTER 16 — The Keeper of the Last Secret

# CHAPTER 16 — The Keeper of the Last Secret
The drive back from St. Gabriel's Chapel was silent.
Not because there was nothing to say.
Because there was too much.
The Founder's Charter rested inside a fireproof case beside Alexander.
The leather binding looked ordinary.
But everyone in the car understood its weight.
Entire fortunes...
Political careers...
And decades of carefully hidden crimes...
Had been built around the secrets inside that single book.
---
That evening...
The house felt strangely tense.
Marco stood by the living room window.
Sofia carefully reread Isabella's final letter.
Alexander was studying the Charter page by page.
Every article.
Every signature.
Every amendment.
Then...
He suddenly stopped.
"Something's missing."
Marco looked over.
"What?"
Alexander turned the final page.
"The Charter ends with Article Twelve."
"So?"
Evelyn frowned.
"There should be thirteen."
Everyone looked at her.
She walked closer.
"I saw it once."
"When I was recruited."

"There were thirteen founding articles."
Alexander slowly flipped through the pages again.
"No pages were torn out."
"Then where is it?"
Evelyn's expression darkened.
"It was never written inside."
---
She pointed toward the inside cover.
A small sentence had been embossed so lightly it was almost invisible.
Article XIII shall remain with the Keeper.
Silence.
Marco whispered,
"The Keeper..."
Alexander looked at Evelyn.
"You know what that means."
She nodded.
"Every generation..."
"The Council appointed one person."
"They never attended meetings."
"They never voted."
"They simply guarded the final article."
Sofia frowned.
"What was in it?"
Evelyn answered quietly.
"No one was allowed to know."
---
At that exact moment...
Thousands of miles away...
Helena entered a private estate hidden in the Swiss Alps.
She was greeted by an elderly man wearing a dark gray suit.
He looked well into his eighties.
Yet his posture remained perfectly straight.
He didn't ask why Helena had come.
He already knew.
"They found the Charter."
Helena nodded.
"They're looking for the Keeper."
The old man smiled faintly.
"They're already too late."
---
Back in Chicago...
Alexander continued searching through Isabella's belongings.
Hours passed.
Nothing.
Until Sofia noticed something unusual.
"The letter."
Alexander looked up.
"What about it?"
"My mother's handwriting."
She placed the original letter beside the note found in the chapel.
"They're different."
Everyone leaned closer.
The words were the same.
The handwriting wasn't.
Marco frowned.
"No..."
Sofia traced the elegant curves of the letters.
"This wasn't written by my mother."
Silence filled the room.
Alexander looked at Evelyn.
"Who wrote it?"
She stared at the page.
Then her eyes widened.
"I know this handwriting."
Everyone froze.
"It belongs to Sister Agnes."
---
Marco looked confused.
"But it says Isabella."
Evelyn nodded slowly.
"Because Agnes copied Isabella's final words."

"Why?"
Alexander asked.
"To protect the original."
Sofia suddenly understood.
"So the real letter..."
"...is somewhere else."
---
Just then...
The front doorbell rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Alexander immediately stood.
No one had been told where they lived.
He quietly checked the security monitor.
An elderly nun stood alone outside.
She looked exhausted.
Her habit was soaked from the rain.
Alexander opened the door cautiously.
The woman smiled weakly.
"I was Sister Agnes's assistant."
She held out a worn leather satchel.
"My name is Sister Catherine."
"I've been looking for Sofia Marino."
---
Everyone gathered in the living room.
Sister Catherine carefully removed a sealed envelope from the satchel.
Unlike every other letter...
This one bore Isabella's actual wax seal.
Untouched.
"I promised Agnes..."
"...I would only deliver this after both she and the Council were gone."
Sofia carefully broke the seal.
Inside...
There was a handwritten letter.
And a small brass key.
But what caught everyone's attention...
Was the final sentence.
"The Keeper was never one of them."
"The Keeper..."
"...was always one of us."
Alexander slowly looked up.
"What does that mean?"
Before anyone could answer...
Sister Catherine whispered five words that made the room fall completely silent.
"I know where she is."
Sofia's heart began to race.
"Who?"
The elderly nun looked directly into her eyes.
"The last Keeper."
She paused.
Then quietly added,
"And she's been watching over you..."
"...since the day you were born."
Outside...
A black SUV slowed to a stop across the street.
Two people remained inside.
Watching the house.
One of them lifted a phone.
"They've found Catherine."
The driver nodded.
"Then Phase Two begins."
The engine quietly started.
And for the first time since the Council had fallen...
Alexander realized they were no longer searching for the truth.
May you like
Now...
They were racing to protect the last person who still held it.
