CHAPTER 26 — The Man Who Wrote the Protocol

# CHAPTER 26 — The Man Who Wrote the Protocol

Sofia couldn't sleep.

Every time she closed her eyes...

The same message appeared.

PRESENCE CONFIRMED.

It wasn't burned into a screen.

It was burned into memory.

And somehow...

That felt worse.

---

Just after sunrise...

Detective Sarah Collins walked into the safe house carrying an old archival box.

Her face was unusually pale.

"I found something."

Marco looked up.

"About Helena?"

Collins slowly shook her head.

"No."

She placed the box on the table.

"It's about the Legacy Protocol."

---

Inside were dozens of classified documents.

Most had been heavily redacted.

One file hadn't.

Across the cover...

Only one name appeared.

Dr. Adrian Keller

---

Sofia frowned.

"I've never heard of him."

Collins nodded.

"Neither had anyone else."

"Until six hours ago."

---

According to the file...

Dr. Adrian Keller had never served on the Council.

He had never been listed as a Keeper.

Never attended a recorded meeting.

Officially...

He didn't exist.

Yet every classified document referenced him.

Not as a leader.

As an architect.

---

Evelyn quietly turned another page.

There was an old black-and-white photograph.

Five people stood together outside a government building.

Carmen Marino.

Isabella Marino.

Three unidentified men.

One face had been circled in red.

A young man wearing glasses.

Smiling.

Dr. Adrian Keller.

---

Marco frowned.

"So he created the Protocol?"

Collins answered quietly.

"No."

She pointed toward a handwritten annotation beneath the photo.

'Designed by Keller. Approved against his wishes.'

Silence filled the room.

---

Sofia read it twice.

Then a third time.

"He didn't want this."

Collins nodded.

"Apparently not."

---

Thousands of miles away...

Alexander arrived in a small coastal village.

The streets were quiet.

Old stone buildings overlooked the harbor.

The fisherman stopped outside a modest church.

"We're here."

Alexander looked confused.

"This isn't a safe house."

The old man smiled.

"No."

"It's safer."

---

Inside...

An elderly priest waited alone.

He stood as Alexander entered.

For several long seconds...

Neither man spoke.

Then the priest smiled.

"You have your mother's eyes."

Alexander froze.

"My mother?"

The priest nodded slowly.

"I buried her."

---

Alexander felt the air leave his lungs.

"No."

"That's impossible."

"There was never a body."

The priest's expression grew sad.

"There wasn't."

"I buried..."

"...what was left of her name."

---

Back in Chicago...

Collins continued reading Keller's file aloud.

"Three months before the Council adopted the Legacy Protocol..."

"He submitted a formal objection."

Marco leaned closer.

"What did he say?"

Collins unfolded a fragile letter.

The paper was yellow with age.

She read aloud.

> "No institution should ever survive by making itself impossible to leave."

Nobody spoke.

The sentence settled over the room like a warning sent decades too late.

---

Another page.

Another handwritten note.

This one from Carmen Marino herself.

Only seven words.

'Then we'll build something worth staying for.'

Sofia looked up.

"So what happened?"

Collins slowly closed the folder.

"Carmen lost the vote."

---

Across the Adriatic...

Helena sat alone inside the monastery library.

A hidden drawer had finally opened.

Inside...

There was no money.

No weapons.

No secret codes.

Only a leather-bound journal.

Embossed on the front:

A. Keller

Helena opened the first page.

Then stopped breathing for a moment.

The first sentence read:

> If you're reading this... then I failed to stop them.

---

Helena's confident smile disappeared.

She turned the next page.

Then another.

Every chapter described the same fear.

Not that the Council would become corrupt.

But that future generations would confuse continuity...

...with morality.

---

Back inside the church...

The priest led Alexander beneath the sanctuary.

Into a small stone crypt.

There...

Resting on a wooden shelf...

Was a faded tin box.

The priest gently handed it to him.

"Your mother asked that this be opened..."

"...only if the Council ever came back."

Alexander's hands trembled.

Inside the box...

There were photographs.

Letters.

A silver necklace.

And one sealed envelope.

Across the front...

His mother's handwriting.

For my son.

---

At the same moment...

Sofia's phone vibrated again.

No message.

No command.

Only a photograph.

Black and white.

Taken decades earlier.

It showed Carmen Marino...

Standing beside a young scientist.

Dr. Adrian Keller.

On the back...

Someone had recently written four words.

Find what he hid.

---

For the first time since Helena activated the Legacy Protocol...

Sofia smiled.

Because for the first time...

They weren't reacting to Helena's next move.

They had discovered someone...

May you like

Who had been planning against her...

Long before she was ever born.
