CHAPTER 6

The Council.

Javier read the word three times.

Then looked up at Sofia.

"My mother always talked about protecting the family."

He swallowed.

"I never realized..."

"...she wasn't talking about ours."

At that exact moment, inside Alexander's house, the lawyer was already searching through every document from Locker 418.

"There has to be another clue."

Alexander nodded.

"If Carmen inherited the system, someone had to create it."

The lawyer suddenly stopped turning pages.

"Wait."

She carefully removed what looked like an ordinary divider sheet.

Hidden behind it was a folded blueprint.

Not for a building.

For an organization.

Across the top were the words:

THE ASCENDANCY COUNCIL

Beneath it, seven circles were connected by thick black lines.

Each circle represented one family.

One of them was labeled:

VELASCO

The other six names had been deliberately blacked out.

Elena felt her stomach drop.

"There are seven families?"

The lawyer nodded slowly.

"At least."

Miles away, a convoy of black vehicles entered the underground parking garage beneath Carmen's headquarters.

There were no company logos.

No license plates.

Every vehicle was identical.

Carmen was already waiting.

The elevator doors opened.

Seven people stepped out.

Three men.

Four women.

None of them appeared younger than sixty.

Yet every movement carried quiet authority.

No introductions were necessary.

Everyone in the room stood.

Even Carmen.

The woman at the front wore a simple navy suit.

No jewelry except a silver ring engraved with the same broken-circle symbol Alexander had found.

She looked directly at Carmen.

"You've become careless."

Carmen remained composed.

"I've contained the situation."

The older woman didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she walked toward the enormous window overlooking the city.

"No."

She said quietly.

"You've personalized it."

Carmen's eyes narrowed.

"This family resisted."

"So did others."

The older woman's voice remained calm.

"But you struck the daughter yourself."

Silence.

One of the men finally spoke.

"That was an emotional decision."

Carmen answered immediately.

"It was necessary."

"No."

The woman interrupted.

"It was weakness."

Across town...

Sofia and Javier had returned to Alexander's house.

No one trusted anyone completely.

But everyone understood one thing.

The truth was becoming bigger than any of them.

Alexander looked directly at Javier.

"I have one question."

Javier nodded.

"Ask."

"If your mother ordered you to testify against Sofia tomorrow..."

Javier didn't hesitate.

"I won't."

Alexander watched him carefully.

"What changed?"

Javier looked toward Sofia.

"For the first time in my life..."

"I realized obedience isn't loyalty."

"It's fear."

Before anyone could respond—

the lights suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Elena gasped.

Then every phone lost signal.

Every laptop shut down.

The emergency generator never activated.

Alexander immediately reached beneath the table.

He removed a locked metal case.

Inside was a flashlight and a licensed handgun.

The lawyer frowned.

"How did they kill the power?"

Alexander answered quietly.

"They didn't."

He looked toward the front door.

"They killed the network."

A second later...

Someone knocked.

Three slow knocks.

Then silence.

No one moved.

Another three knocks.

Alexander approached the door without opening it.

"Who is it?"

A calm female voice answered from the other side.

"I came alone."

"I have no weapon."

"I work for the Council."

Everyone froze.

The woman continued.

"If you don't open this door..."

"...everyone inside this house will be dead before sunrise."

Alexander slowly unlocked the door.

Standing on the porch was a woman in her early seventies.

Elegant.

Composed.

She carried no purse.

No phone.

Only a thin leather folder.

She stepped inside without waiting to be invited.

Her eyes immediately settled on Sofia.

"So."

She smiled faintly.

"You're the one who survived Carmen."

Sofia didn't answer.

The woman nodded approvingly.

"Good."

"You've already learned not to trust strangers."

She placed the leather folder on the table.

"My name is Evelyn Ward."

"I was Chairwoman before Carmen."

The room fell completely silent.

Alexander stared at her.

"I thought Carmen inherited the position."

"I did."

Evelyn replied.

"But I resigned."

Javier frowned.

"You can resign?"

A sad smile crossed Evelyn's face.

"No."

"I escaped."

She opened the folder.

Inside were dozens of photographs.

Every one showed a different young woman.

Wedding dresses.

Engagement parties.

Family celebrations.

Some smiled.

Some looked frightened.

Several photographs had black ribbons across the corners.

Elena whispered,

"Who are they?"

Evelyn answered quietly,

"The ones we couldn't save."

She turned another page.

Then another.

Finally...

She stopped.

There, clipped neatly to the final page, was a recent color photograph.

Taken only weeks earlier.

It showed Sofia leaving her apartment.

Someone had photographed her from across the street.

Across the top, in neat typed letters, were the words:

Candidate Approved.

Below that...

Another line had been added only two days ago.

Status: Non-Compliant.

Resolution Authorized.

Alexander's blood ran cold.

"What does 'Resolution Authorized' mean?"

Evelyn looked every person in the room directly in the eyes.

Her answer came almost as a whisper.

"It means..."

"...the Council has officially decided that Sofia is no longer meant to become part of the family."

A long silence followed.

Then Evelyn finished the sentence that changed everything.

May you like

"They've decided..."

"...she must disappear."
