CHAPTER 18 — The Siege

# CHAPTER 18 — The Siege

The first bullet shattered the stained-glass window.

Colored fragments exploded across the stone floor.

The peaceful lighthouse that had stood for more than a century suddenly became a battlefield.

Alexander reacted instantly.

"Everyone down!"

He pulled Sofia behind one of the massive stone support columns as another volley of gunfire ripped through the front windows.

Marco shielded Sister Catherine with his body.

Evelyn grabbed the leather case containing the Founder's Charter.

Eleanor remained standing.

Calm.

Almost impossibly calm.

---

Outside...

Four black SUVs blocked every road leading to the lighthouse.

Twelve armed men surrounded the building.

Their movements were disciplined.

Military.

Not criminals.

Professionals.

One woman stepped out of the lead vehicle.

Tall.

Elegant.

Silver hair tucked beneath a dark coat.

Helena.

She looked up at the lighthouse.

"So..."

"The Keeper has finally passed the Charter."

She smiled faintly.

"Right on schedule."

---

Inside...

Alexander checked his phone.

No signal.

The attackers were jamming every communication frequency.

"They planned this," he muttered.

Evelyn nodded.

"They always do."

---

The loudspeaker crackled again.

"Alexander Marino."

"We're not here to kill innocent people."

"Bring Sofia outside."

"And everyone else walks away."

No one moved.

Sofia looked toward the shattered window.

"They're lying."

Eleanor answered quietly.

"Yes."

"They never leave witnesses."

---

Suddenly—

A heavy crash echoed from below.

The front door had been breached.

Boots thundered across the first floor.

"They're inside," Marco whispered.

Alexander looked around quickly.

"There has to be another exit."

Eleanor nodded.

"There is."

She pointed toward the spiral staircase.

"The lighthouse was built during the Civil War."

"There are escape tunnels beneath it."

---

Without another word...

They hurried downstairs.

Hidden behind an old storage room...

Eleanor pulled a rusted iron lever.

Part of the stone wall slowly slid open.

A narrow underground passage appeared.

Cold air rushed out.

Marco stared.

"I never knew this existed."

"It wasn't meant to be known."

---

Behind them...

Voices echoed through the lighthouse.

"They're heading downstairs!"

"Move!"

The attackers were getting closer.

---

Alexander turned to everyone.

"You go."

Sofia grabbed his arm.

"What about you?"

"I'm buying time."

"No."

Her voice broke.

"We stay together."

Alexander smiled gently.

"We will."

"But only if someone slows them down."

---

Before anyone could argue...

Marco stepped forward.

"I'll do it."

Alexander shook his head.

"No."

"You have your daughter back."

"You've already lost twenty-seven years."

"I'm not taking another minute from you."

Marco opened his mouth to protest.

But Alexander had already pushed the emergency steel gate closed behind them.

The mechanism locked automatically.

He stood alone on the opposite side.

---

Sofia screamed.

"Alexander!"

He smiled through the bars.

"I love you."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I love you too."

Then he turned.

Facing the approaching attackers.

---

The first armed man rounded the corner.

Alexander didn't hesitate.

He grabbed an old fire extinguisher from the wall and slammed it into the man's chest.

The attacker crashed backward into two others.

Chaos erupted.

---

Down inside the tunnel...

Sofia could still hear the struggle above.

Every crash.

Every shout.

Every gunshot echoed through the narrow passage.

She covered her mouth.

"We have to go back."

Eleanor grabbed her hand.

"If you go back..."

"...everything Isabella died for ends tonight."

---

Meanwhile...

Alexander fought with everything he had.

Not because he believed he could defeat twelve trained operatives.

Because every second mattered.

One more minute.

One more hallway.

One more locked door.

Anything to let Sofia escape.

---

Outside...

Helena calmly checked her watch.

"They're delaying."

An operative approached.

"Should we eliminate him?"

She shook her head.

"No."

She looked toward the lighthouse.

"He isn't the objective."

She smiled coldly.

"The girl is."

---

Deep inside the escape tunnel...

The group finally reached an old steel door.

Eleanor inserted another antique key.

The lock clicked.

Sunlight flooded inside.

They emerged onto a secluded beach hidden beneath the cliffs.

A small fishing boat waited at the dock.

Marco looked stunned.

"You planned all this."

Eleanor nodded.

"No."

"Isabella did."

---

Before anyone could board...

Sofia froze.

There...

Floating in the water beside the dock...

Was a familiar object.

A small wooden toy horse.

Exactly like the one Marco had carved for her fifth birthday.

She picked it up.

Attached to it was a waterproof envelope.

Inside...

A single handwritten note.

The handwriting belonged unmistakably to Isabella.

"If you are standing on this beach..."

"Then Alexander chose to stay behind."

Sofia's heart stopped.

She looked toward Eleanor.

"How could my mother know?"

Eleanor's eyes slowly filled with tears.

"Because..."

"...she made the same choice."

Far above them...

Gunfire echoed once more through the lighthouse.

And for the first time...

Sofia realized that history was repeating itself.

A generation earlier, Isabella had sacrificed everything to save her daughter.

Now...

May you like

Alexander was risking everything...

To make sure that sacrifice had not been in vain.
