CHAPTER 9 — The House Under Siege

No one moved.
The security monitor showed three men walking calmly through the front gate.
No masks.
No weapons in sight.
No hurry.
That frightened Alexander more than anything.
Professionals never rushed.
They didn't need to.
Evelyn's voice was barely above a whisper.
"They're not assassins."
Alexander looked at her.
"No?"
She slowly shook her head.
"They're Retrieval Officers."
Javier frowned.
"Retrieval?"
Evelyn nodded.
"If Sofia walks out of this house willingly..."
"The Council wins."
"If she refuses..."
She looked toward the front door.
"...then someone else leaves in a body bag."
Silence swallowed the room.
The doorbell rang.
Once.
Calm.
Polite.
No pounding.
No shouting.
Just one gentle chime.
Elena instinctively stepped toward Sofia.
Alexander raised one hand.
"No one opens that door."
The bell rang again.
This time...
A man's voice came through the intercom.
"Good evening."
"My name is Charles Whitaker."
"I represent the Heritage Family Trust."
"We're here to escort Miss Sofia Marino home."
Sofia stared at the speaker.
"I don't have a home with them."
Charles answered immediately.
"You were born into one."
Alexander pressed the microphone.
"Leave."
A pause.
Then Charles smiled into the camera.
"I'm afraid that's no longer an option."
Suddenly—
Every phone inside the house vibrated.
At exactly the same moment.
Alexander checked his screen.
BANK ALERT
ALL PERSONAL ACCOUNTS TEMPORARILY FROZEN
Elena gasped.
"My accounts too."
Javier checked his phone.
"So are mine."
Within seconds—
Another notification.
INSURANCE COVERAGE SUSPENDED
Another.
PROPERTY TITLE UNDER EMERGENCY REVIEW
Another.
BUSINESS LICENSE TEMPORARILY RESTRICTED
Alexander understood instantly.
"They're not attacking us."
"They're erasing us."
Evelyn nodded.
"This is how Protocol Black begins."
"No bullets."
"No explosions."
"They destroy your life until survival becomes impossible."
Across the city...
Inside a federal data center...
An elderly systems administrator frowned.
Dozens of emergency legal requests had appeared simultaneously.
Every request carried the same authorization code.
Level Omega.
The highest civilian priority.
He whispered to himself,
"Who has authority to do this?"
The answer shocked him.
No agency.
No department.
Every request had been approved by private legal entities.
Back at the house...
Javier suddenly stood.
"I know someone."
Everyone looked at him.
"My grandfather."
Silence.
Alexander frowned.
"I thought he died years ago."
Javier slowly shook his head.
"No."
"My mother told everyone he was dead."
Evelyn's eyes widened.
"Eduardo Velasco..."
Javier nodded.
"He's alive."
"And he left the Council fifteen years ago."
Alexander stared.
"You never told anyone?"
Javier looked ashamed.
"He made me promise."
"He said..."
"If the Council ever comes for someone innocent..."
"...find him."
Alexander immediately asked,
"Where is he?"
Javier hesitated.
"I don't know exactly."
"But..."
He reached into the leather ledger.
Inside the back cover...
A small folded map had been hidden beneath the lining.
Handwritten coordinates.
One sentence.
When darkness wins... come here.
Outside...
Charles received a phone call.
He listened quietly.
Then nodded once.
"I understand."
He hung up.
One of the other men asked,
"Orders?"
Charles looked toward the house.
"Negotiations are over."
He opened the trunk of the sedan.
Inside...
Were several black metal cases.
Not guns.
Technology.
Signal jammers.
Power disruptors.
Electronic bypass equipment.
Within seconds...
The lights inside Alexander's home flickered.
Once.
Twice.

Then everything went dark.
Only emergency backup lights remained.
The alarm system shut down.
The security cameras went offline.
Every electronic lock disengaged.
Click.
Click.
Click.
Elena grabbed Sofia's hand.
"They're inside the system."
Alexander opened a nearby cabinet.
Inside...
An old shotgun.
Javier looked surprised.
"You own a gun?"
Alexander loaded it calmly.
"I prayed I'd never need it."
A loud knock echoed through the house.
Not from the front door.
From the back entrance.
Then another.
From the side patio.
Then another.
The garage.
They had surrounded the house.
Charles' voice echoed through the darkness.
"Mr. Marino."
"We're coming inside."
"No one has to die tonight."
A pause.
"Give us Sofia."
No one answered.
Suddenly—
A crash came from the basement.
Glass shattered.
Elena screamed.
Alexander turned toward the sound.
"They're in."
Before anyone could move—
A familiar voice echoed from the darkness.
"Nobody move."
Everyone froze.
An elderly man stepped into the emergency light.
White hair.
Dark overcoat.
Walking with a wooden cane.
But his eyes were sharp.
Dangerously sharp.
Javier gasped.

"Grandfather..."
Eduardo Velasco looked at his grandson.
Then at Alexander.
Then at Sofia.
Finally, he spoke the words that changed everything.
"They've come for the wrong family."
He slowly removed an old silver ring from his finger...
A ring bearing the same black emblem as the Council.
"I helped build the Council."
His voice became ice cold.
"And tonight..."
May you like
He looked toward the shattered basement door.
"I'm going to teach them how to destroy it."
