CHAPTER 12

CHAPTER 12: THE SECOND LETTER

I didn't sleep.

I kept staring at the second envelope.

Samantha's name was written in my grandmother's careful handwriting.

I wasn't sure what to do.

Part of me wanted to leave it alone.

Another part knew I couldn't.

The next morning I called her.

She sounded surprised.

"Everything okay?"

"I found something."

Silence.

"What kind of something?"

"A letter."

She laughed nervously.

"You sound mysterious."

"It's from Grandma."

The line went silent.

"Grandma?"

"Yes."

Twenty minutes later she was standing on my porch.

She looked tired.

Life had not been kind to her either.

I handed her the envelope.

She stared at it.

Her hands shook.

"Why didn't Mom ever mention these?"

"I don't know."

She opened it slowly.

I watched her read.

At first there was confusion.

Then shock.

Then tears.

She covered her mouth.

"What?" I asked.

She looked up.

"She knew."

"Knew what?"

Samantha swallowed.

"She knew I always felt second."

I said nothing.

"She wrote that I spent my whole life trying to earn love instead of believing I already had it."

Tears rolled down her face.

"I never told anyone that."

She read another line.

Then she cried harder.

"What does it say?"

She looked at me.

"It says... your sister is not your competition. She is the person who will understand your pain better than anyone."

The room became quiet.

Years.

Years of resentment.

Years of comparison.

Years of anger.

And an old woman had seen it all.

"I hated you sometimes," Samantha whispered.

"I know."

"I thought Mom loved you more."

I stared at her.

"Really?"

She nodded.

I laughed sadly.

"I thought she loved you more."

We both stared at each other.

Then, unexpectedly, we both started laughing.

Because it was absurd.

Two daughters.

Both convinced they were loved less.

Both wrong.

And both hurt by the same person.

For the first time in months, Samantha looked at me without guilt.

Only sadness.

And something else.

Recognition.

Maybe this was how healing started.

May you like

Not with forgiveness.

With honesty.
