CHAPTER 45

CHAPTER 45: THE WORDS WE NEEDED

One evening, my mother and I sat in the garden.

The sunflowers were beginning to fade.

Summer was ending.

"I've been thinking," she said.

"That's dangerous."

She laughed.

"I know."

Then she became serious.

"When all of this started, I thought I had ruined everything forever."

I stayed quiet.

"And maybe I had."

I looked at her.

"But you gave me another chance."

I shook my head.

"We gave each other another chance."

Tears filled her eyes.

After a while, she whispered:

"I was so afraid of losing my family that I nearly became the reason I lost it."

I took her hand.

"But you didn't."

She looked at me.

"No?"

I smiled.

"Because we're here."

The evening breeze moved through the flowers.

Then she asked:

"Do you know what I regret most?"

"What?"

"Not saying things when I had the chance."

I squeezed her hand.

"Then say them now."

She smiled softly.

"I am proud of you."

I felt tears sting my eyes.

"You built a beautiful life."

More tears.

"You became a wonderful mother."

I couldn't speak.

"And you are so much stronger than I ever realized."

I looked at her.

All my life I had wanted those words.

And here they were.

Simple.

Quiet.

Perfect.

"I needed to hear that," I whispered.

She smiled.

"I know."

For a long time, we sat together in the fading light.

Mother.

Daughter.

No longer separated by silence.

No longer trapped by old pain.

Just two people finally saying the things that should have been said years ago.

May you like

And somehow...

it wasn't too late.
