CHAPTER 41

CHAPTER 41: THE CHECKUP

Three months later, my mother had another scan.

No one said it out loud, but we were all afraid.

The waiting room felt too quiet.

My father kept reading the same magazine.

Samantha checked her phone every thirty seconds.

I stared at the floor.

Ella sat beside my mother, holding her hand.

"Do you think the doctors get nervous too?" she asked.

My mother smiled.

"I hope not."

"I think they probably do."

The nurse finally called her name.

For an hour, we waited.

It felt like an entire day.

Then the doctor walked in.

He smiled.

"It's good news."

Nobody moved.

"The treatment is working."

My father started crying immediately.

Samantha covered her mouth.

I couldn't breathe.

The doctor continued speaking, but I barely heard him.

Working.

The treatment was working.

When we left the hospital, the sun seemed brighter.

My mother looked at all of us.

"I think this calls for pancakes."

We all laughed.

Even the doctor.

May you like

And that afternoon, we ate pancakes for dinner.

Because sometimes ordinary celebrations are the most important ones.
