CHAPTER 32

CHAPTER 32: THE PUPPY
Two weeks later, there was a knock at my door.
I opened it and nearly laughed.
My father stood there holding a tiny golden puppy.
Ella screamed.
"What is that?!"
"A mistake," my father said.
The puppy barked.
"A very cute mistake."
Apparently, one of his neighbors had a litter and needed homes.
Ella immediately picked up the puppy.
"We're keeping him."
I blinked.
"We haven't discussed this."
"We are now."
The puppy licked my face.
Traitor.
An hour later, the dog had a name.
Sunny.
My mother laughed so hard she nearly cried.
"You always said no pets."
"I know," I admitted.
"And yet here we are."
That evening, Sunny fell asleep in my mother's lap.
She gently stroked his fur.
"He trusts so easily."
I looked at the puppy.
"He doesn't know enough not to."
She smiled sadly.
"Maybe that's a good thing."
For a moment, we simply watched the sleeping dog.
Then she whispered:
"I hope I can learn to trust life again."
I looked at her.
"You already are."
May you like
She smiled.
Maybe I was right.
