Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN AT THE DOOR

The woman standing outside the hospital room was Mariana Solís.

For almost thirty years, Mariana had served the Alcázar family.

She had raised Sebastián after his father became consumed by the family business.

She had prepared his school lunches, waited beside his bed when he was sick, and comforted him after every argument with Rebeca.

To Sebastián, Mariana had been more than an employee.

She had been the closest thing he had ever known to a second mother.

But six months earlier, Rebeca had announced that Mariana had stolen jewelry from the Alcázar estate.

Mariana disappeared before Sebastián could question her.

Now she stood in the doorway holding a small silver flash drive.

Rebeca rose from her chair in the hallway.

Her peaceful expression vanished.

“You were told what to say,” Rebeca said.

Mariana looked directly at her.

“I was told to lie.”

Octavio stepped forward.

“You signed an agreement.”

“I signed it because you threatened my son.”

Sebastián turned toward his cousin.

“What is she talking about?”

Octavio’s face remained controlled.

“She is confused.”

Mariana walked into the room.

She stopped beside Valeria’s bed and looked at the bruises covering her legs.

Tears filled her eyes.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

Valeria squeezed her hand.

“You came.”

“I should have come sooner.”

Sebastián stared at them.

“You knew about this?”

Mariana faced him.

“I saw what happened the night your wife received those bruises.”

The room became silent.

Rebeca moved toward the door.

“This woman is unstable.”

Mariana lifted the flash drive.

“This contains the security recording from the service corridor at Casa Alcázar.”

Octavio’s expression changed.

It lasted less than a second.

But Sebastián saw it.

Mariana continued.

“The original recording was erased from the family system.”

She looked at Octavio.

“But I copied it before he could destroy it.”

Sebastián took the flash drive.

His hand trembled.

“What does it show?”

Mariana’s voice broke.

“It shows your mother ordering two security guards to restrain Valeria.”

Sebastián looked at Rebeca.

Rebeca did not deny it.

Mariana pointed toward the black leather folder.

“It also shows Octavio forcing Valeria’s hand against documents while she was barely conscious.”

Octavio stepped toward her.

“That is enough.”

Sebastián moved between them.

“Don’t touch her.”

It was the first time he had ever spoken to Octavio that way.

Octavio stopped.

Sebastián looked down at the flash drive.

For three years, he had believed his family.

Now the truth was sitting inside his hand.

And someone outside the room had just disconnected the hospital’s security cameras.
