Chapter 17 - THE NURSERY DOOR

A single shot echoed through the mill.
Sebastián dropped behind a steel machine.
The bullet struck a window above him.
Mateo’s agents entered from three directions.
Emergency lights flashed red across the factory floor.
Octavio ran toward the rear exit.
Rebeca remained beside the metal cases.
She did not call after him.
She did not ask whether Sebastián was injured.
She only tried to drag one of the cases toward a side door.
An agent stopped her.
Octavio reached the loading dock.
Mateo tackled him before he could enter a waiting car.
The pistol slid across the concrete.
Within seconds, Octavio was in handcuffs.
Sebastián stood slowly.
His shoulder had been cut by broken glass, but he was alive.
Mateo removed the microphone.
“It recorded everything.”
Rebeca looked at her son.
“You planned this.”
“Yes.”
“You used me.”
Sebastián’s voice was quiet.
“I learned from you.”
Agents opened the metal cases.
Inside were bank records, payoff lists, forged contracts, and recordings.
Octavio had documented the entire scheme to protect himself from Rebeca.
One recording came from the night Alejandro died.
Dr. Mena warned Rebeca that Alejandro’s heart medication had been changed.
Rebeca instructed him not to correct the prescription until after a board meeting.
The evidence did not prove that she intended to kill her husband.
But it proved she knowingly allowed a dangerous mistake to continue.
Alejandro died before the meeting ended.
Rebeca was arrested for conspiracy, fraud, coercion, and obstruction.
Dr. Mena was arrested at the airport.
Octavio agreed to cooperate in exchange for protection.
By sunrise, the Alcázar empire was no longer controlled by Rebeca.
Sebastián returned to the hospital.
Valeria was awake.
Lucía slept in a clear bassinet beside her.
Sebastián remained near the door.
He did not assume he was welcome.
“It’s over,” he said.
Valeria looked at the bandage on his shoulder.
“Is she in custody?”
“Yes.”
“Octavio?”
“Yes.”
“Mena?”
“Yes.”
Valeria released a breath she seemed to have been holding for years.
Sebastián walked toward the bassinet.
Lucía opened her eyes.
He touched one finger to her tiny hand.
She held it.
Valeria watched him.
“You protected her tonight.”
Sebastián looked at his daughter.
“I should have protected both of you long before tonight.”
Valeria placed his ring on the table between them.
“You don’t earn this back by defeating your mother.”
“I know.”
“You earn it by becoming someone who listens before a woman has to beg.”
Sebastián nodded.
Outside the room, workers removed Rebeca’s name from the hospital’s private wing.

Inside, Valeria finally closed her eyes without fearing that the nursery door would open.
