Chapter 14 - THE MESSAGE SEBASTIÁN NEVER SENT
The courthouse was locked down.
Mateo traced the call, but Octavio disconnected after eleven seconds.
The signal came from a disposable phone somewhere near the hospital.
Sebastián stood so quickly that his chair fell backward.
“He’s going after Lucía.”
Federal agents rushed toward the exits.
Valeria tried to rise from her wheelchair.
Pain forced her back down.
“Go,” she told Sebastián.
He hesitated.
“Go protect her.”
Sebastián ran with Mateo.
At the hospital, the hallway outside Lucía’s room appeared normal.
Two agents remained at the door.
Neither had seen Octavio.
Inside, Dr. Navarro held the baby.
Lucía was safe.
Then the lights went out.
Emergency power activated seconds later.
During the darkness, someone locked the suite from the outside.
Smoke began entering through the ventilation system.
Mateo broke the glass beside the fire door.
Sebastián covered Lucía with a blanket while Dr. Navarro moved Valeria’s medical equipment away from the smoke.
The alarm finally activated.
Firefighters reached the floor.
The smoke came from a small device placed inside the ventilation room.
It was a distraction.
While the hospital was evacuated, someone entered the evidence office downstairs.
The flash drive, memory card, and sedative report were stolen.
Octavio had never intended to take Lucía.
He wanted the evidence.
Mateo looked at Sebastián.
“He knows the ledger is enough to destroy everyone.”
Sebastián removed his phone.
“The original recordings were uploaded to my private cloud account.”
Mateo shook his head.
“Your family controls the company servers.”
“Not this account.”
Valeria had created it months earlier.
She used it to store photographs and documents Sebastián had refused to examine.
Every message.
Every medical report.
Every recording.
Even the text from Sebastián’s number.
A telecommunications expert analyzed the message.
It had not come from Sebastián’s phone.
Octavio had used a cloned electronic SIM connected to the Alcázar corporate network.
The expert recovered the activation request.
It had been approved through Rebeca’s personal office.
Sebastián returned to court with the report.
He took the witness stand.
Under oath, he admitted that he had doubted his wife.
He admitted signing blank forms.
He admitted allowing his mother access to their medical information.
Then he looked at Valeria.
“The message was false.”
“But the conditions that made it believable were created by me.”
Valeria’s eyes filled with tears.
Sebastián faced the judge.
“My wife was not abandoned because my family fooled me.”
“She was abandoned because I refused to listen.”
Judge Cárdenas suspended the custody order.
Lucía would remain with Valeria.
Then a court officer entered carrying another document.
A notarized agreement stated that Valeria had voluntarily surrendered custody three months earlier.
