Chapter 6 - THE GRANDFATHER’S TRUST

Sebastián read the flight manifest three times.
Valeria’s name was listed.
The baby was identified only as FEMALE INFANT ALCÁZAR.
Rebeca was not on the passenger list.
Neither was Octavio.
“They were going to send Valeria away,” Sebastián said.
Mateo nodded.
“And keep the child here.”
Mariana looked toward the locked door.
“Clínica Santa Aurelia was only the story they planned to tell the public.”
The real destination was a private medical residence near Geneva.
A place where wealthy families could hide relatives without attracting attention.
The transfer documents granted indefinite authority to a physician selected by Octavio.
Once Valeria entered the facility, she would lose access to her phone, passport, attorneys, and financial accounts.
She could disappear for years.
Sebastián walked to the window.
Monterrey’s lights stretched across the darkness.
For most of his life, those lights had represented everything his family controlled.
Factories.
Hotels.
Construction projects.
Banks.
Hospitals.
He had been proud of the Alcázar name.
Now it looked like a cage built across an entire city.
Mateo opened the trust document.
“Alejandro placed thirty-six percent of the company into a protected inheritance.”
“He also added a morality clause.”
“If the child’s guardian is convicted of fraud, coercion, or violence, control transfers to an independent trustee.”
Sebastián understood immediately.
“My mother needed custody before anyone discovered the financial crimes.”
Mateo nodded.
“She could control the shares through your daughter.”
“And if Valeria remained the mother and legal guardian?”
“She could request a full audit.”
Valeria looked at Sebastián.
“That is why your mother spent three years convincing everyone I was unstable.”
Every argument suddenly made sense.
Every private conversation Rebeca later repeated incorrectly.
Every doctor’s note describing Valeria as emotional.
Every dinner where Rebeca provoked her until she cried.
They had not been random acts of cruelty.
They had been evidence manufactured over time.
Sebastián sat beside the bed.
“I believed them.”
Valeria did not comfort him.
“You chose to believe them.”
The difference mattered.
Before Sebastián could respond, Dr. Navarro entered.
“The baby’s heart rate is dropping.”
The room changed instantly.
Nurses moved around the bed.
Valeria reached for Sebastián.
“Promise me.”
He leaned closer.
“No one takes her.”
“Not your mother.”
“No one.”
Valeria searched his face.
“You already made promises once.”
Sebastián felt the weight of those words.
This time, he did not ask her to trust him.
He simply said, “I will prove it.”
The doors opened.
Valeria was rushed toward surgery.
As Sebastián followed, Mateo received a call.
He listened for several seconds.
Then he looked toward the elevator.
Octavio had been found.
May you like
But the black leather folder he carried was gone.
