Chapter 19 - WHAT VALERIA CHOSE

Six months passed.
Rebeca’s trial became one of the largest financial cases in Nuevo León.
Octavio testified against her.
Dr. Mena admitted falsifying Valeria’s records and supplying the sedatives.
Judge Villarreal pleaded guilty to accepting payments.
Teresa confessed that she had staged photographs inside Casa Alcázar.
The nurse who attempted to transfer Lucía received a reduced sentence after cooperating.
Rebeca never admitted guilt.
She claimed every action had been necessary to protect the family.
The jury disagreed.
She was convicted on multiple charges.
When the verdict was announced, Rebeca turned toward Sebastián.
He sat beside Valeria, but there was space between them.
Rebeca searched her son’s face for the obedience she had controlled since childhood.
She found none.
Valeria did not celebrate.
No sentence could return the years she had lost.
But the verdict gave those years a name.
What happened had been real.
It had not been oversensitivity.
It had not been imagination.
It had been abuse.
Outside the courthouse, Sebastián stopped near the steps.
“I signed the separation papers because I wanted you to have a way out.”
Valeria held Lucía against her shoulder.
“I know.”
“Have you decided?”
“Yes.”
Sebastián prepared himself.
“I’m not filing them today.”
Hope appeared in his eyes.
Valeria raised one hand.
“That does not mean everything is forgiven.”
“I understand.”
“It means I want time.”
“You can have all the time you need.”
“No.”
Valeria shook her head.
“I don’t need you to give me time.”
“It is already mine.”
Sebastián nodded.
She continued.
“You will attend counseling.”
“I already started.”
“You will never make decisions about Lucía without me.”
“I won’t.”
“You will never dismiss my fear because listening is inconvenient.”
“I won’t.”
“And if you ever ask me to choose between my safety and your family name, I will leave before you finish the sentence.”
Sebastián looked at Lucía.
“The family name nearly destroyed us.”
“Then we build something that does not depend on it.”
Valeria handed him the baby.
Lucía touched his face.
Sebastián smiled through tears.
It was not forgiveness.
It was not a perfect reunion.
It was the beginning of accountability.
For Valeria, that mattered more than promises.
Across the street, Mariana waited with her son.
Mateo stood beside them.
The people who had finally protected Valeria were not the ones who shared her name.
May you like
They were the ones who had chosen the truth.
