Chapter 10: New Beginnings and Old Shadows

By late afternoon, Elena sat at a sunlit wooden desk in the newly renovated administrative office on the ground floor of the east wing. A fresh vase of yellow wildflowers rested near her brass desk lamp, a thoughtful gift from the kitchen staff to celebrate her appointment. Spread out before her were the newly audited application forms for the foundation's revived higher education grant, with her brother Mateo's completed file sitting proudly at the top of the stack.
A gentle knock sounded on the open office door, and Arthur stepped inside holding a warm cup of coffee. He pulled up an oak armchair across from her desk, dropping his customary formal posture as he took a seat.
"How are you adjusting to the new office, Elena?" Arthur asked, a subtle smile touching his usually serious face. "It's quite a transition from cleaning the main halls."
Elena looked up from her documents, her light brown hair neatly arranged and her expression calm and focused. "It feels surreal, Mr. Vance," she said gently. "But reviewing these scholarship files gives me so much peace. Mateo called me an hour ago after receiving his official acceptance letter and foundation grant approval. He was in tears of joy."
Arthur nodded quietly, his dark eyes softening with genuine warmth. "That is precisely why my father built this institution. Knowing that ambitious young people like Mateo can build a bright future without soul-crushing debt makes every single struggle worthwhile."
His expression gradually shifted, becoming slightly more serious as he leaned forward in his chair. "However, I must be completely transparent with you about what lies ahead regarding the pending legal proceedings."
Elena set her fountain pen down carefully on the leather blotter. "Has something happened with Victoria's court case?"
"Her criminal defense attorneys filed a formal pre-trial motion this morning," Arthur explained calmly, his American accent steady and unhurried. "They are arguing that our late-night search of the master study violated private property boundaries, and they are attempting to suppress the navy ledger as evidence."
Elena’s brow furrowed with concern, though her voice remained steady and firm. "Can they really exclude the ledger when it contains direct proof of her theft?"

"They will certainly try," Arthur replied, his voice grounded in quiet, unwavering determination. "Victoria still has substantial financial resources remaining in private personal accounts outside the immediate jurisdiction of the trust. She will use every procedural trick to avoid prison time. But we possess the digital security recordings, undisputed bank wire confirmations, and your own sworn testimony. The legal battle ahead will be contentious, but truth and justice will ultimately prevail."
Elena looked at her brother's grant approval form, her hand steady and filled with fresh purpose. "Then we stand ready, Mr. Vance."
