Chapter 3: Quiet Confessions

The quiet warmth of the morning room offered little comfort to Elena as she sat on the edge of a floral sofa, clutching a warm porcelain cup of tea in both hands. Her light brown hair bun had been neatly adjusted, though her pale skin still bore the faint pink traces of dried tears. When the door opened and Arthur walked in, she instinctively stood up, smoothing down the front of her black and white maid dress.

"Please, sit down, Elena," Arthur said gently, motioning for her to rest. He pulled up an armchair across from her, dropping his authoritative tone in favor of a quiet, reassuring presence. "You don't need to stand. You're safe here."

Elena sat back down slowly, keeping her eyes fixed on her teacup. "Thank you, Mr. Vance. I... I didn't know what was going to happen when Mrs. Ashford pointed at my bag. I thought no one would believe me."

"I believed you," Arthur said. "And the playback proved you were telling the truth. You did nothing wrong, Elena. Victoria will not be bothering you again, and your job here is entirely secure."

Elena took a small, careful sip of tea, her hands steadying. She looked up at Arthur, her clear eyes holding a quiet, earnest intelligence. "Mr. Vance... I think I know why she did it."

Arthur tilted his head slightly, his interest piqued. "Go on."

"Yesterday morning, I was assigned to clean the second-floor study in the east wing," Elena explained, her natural American cadence calm and deliberate. "Mrs. Ashford was at the desk, but she stepped out to take a phone call. While dusting the bookshelf, I found a leather folder that had fallen behind the cabinet. When I picked it up to place it on the desk, several bank statements fell out."

"Did you look at them?" Arthur asked softly.

"I didn't mean to pry, sir," Elena said, her voice earnest. "But I saw the name at the top of the header. It wasn't Mrs. Ashford's personal account, nor was it the estate's main account. It was the Vance Children's Foundation. And the final balance listed on the summary sheet was zero dollars."

Arthur leaned forward, his dark eyes narrowing with intense focus. "The foundation account? That fund was created to support community housing and staff education. It should hold nearly two million dollars."

Elena nodded gently. "When Mrs. Ashford walked back into the room and saw me holding those papers, she turned very pale. She snatched them out of my hands without saying a word. Two hours later, her necklace went missing."
