Chapter 6: Confrontation at Dawn

Dawn filtered through the tall stained-glass windows of the grand foyer, casting long amber rays across the polished marble floor. Arthur stood near the central staircase holding the navy leather ledger tightly under his arm, his expression stern and resolute. Beside him, Elena stood with quiet composure, wearing her freshly pressed black and white maid dress. Victoria descended the curving stairs, her sleek dark hair bun slightly frayed and her posture tense beneath her dark silk dressing gown.
Her intense eyes locked onto the navy book in Arthur’s hands, and her face drained of color. "Where did you get that?" Victoria demanded, her voice cracking slightly as she reached the landing. "You had no right to go through my personal belongings, Arthur. That cabinet was private."
"This ledger belongs to the Vance estate trust, Victoria," Arthur replied, his American accent low and measured. "It documents three full years of systemic embezzlement from the children’s foundation. You didn't just frame Elena to protect yourself; you stole from every hard-working family employed on this property."
Victoria took a step forward, her manicured hands trembling slightly as she gestured toward the ledger. "I was going to replace those funds next month. My investments in Chicago suffered unexpected losses, and I needed temporary liquid capital. If you report this to the board or the authorities, the public scandal will destroy the Vance family name."
"The Vance name was built on integrity and accountability," Arthur said firmly. "My father created the foundation to guarantee healthcare and higher education for our staff's children. By stripping those accounts dry, you denied medical grants to families who dedicated their lives to this estate."
Elena looked at Victoria, her eyes steady and clear. "My mother gave twelve years of her life to this home, Mrs. Ashford. When she fell ill, the foundation covered her care. She believed in the goodness of this house. You took that hope away from people who trusted you."

Victoria glared at Elena with intense bitterness, but the false authority in her demeanor had completely vanished. "You are just a housemaid," Victoria whispered, her tone trembling with desperation. "No one on the board will take your word over mine."
"They won't have to," Arthur stated coldly, motioning to two senior estate security guards waiting quietly near the main entrance. "They will take the bank statements, the ledger, and the video playback. Until the legal counsel arrives at nine o'clock, you will remain in your personal guest suite."
