Chapter 2: Behind Closed Doors

The heavy oak door of Arthur’s study closed with a firm, decisive thud, shutting out the anxious murmurs lingering in the grand foyer. Heavy velvet drapes softened the bright afternoon sunlight, casting deep shadows across the polished leather armchairs and mahogany desk. Victoria paced nervously near the cold marble hearth, her posture rigid despite her desperate efforts to appear calm and unbothered. Silver earrings glinted in the dim room as she turned to face Arthur.
"You are completely overreacting, Arthur," Victoria said, her voice tight with artificial confidence. "It was merely an unfortunate misunderstanding. I genuinely believed she took the piece earlier, so I created a situation to confirm my suspicions. I was simply trying to protect the family estate."
Arthur stood behind his large desk, resting both hands flat on the dark, polished wood. His short dark hair framed a face set in hard, unyielding lines. "You planted high-value stolen property in a vulnerable young woman's personal handbag, Victoria. You publicly accused her in front of every employee in this building, knowing they were watching. If I had not insisted on checking the digital security system, she would be sitting in a police precinct right now."
"She is a temporary maid," Victoria retorted, her American accent growing sharp with mounting desperation. "Her standing inside this house is hardly a priority when compared to the long-term financial security of the family trust."
"Her reputation is her sole livelihood," Arthur replied, his voice dropping an octave, quiet and lethal. "Elena has worked in this mansion for six months without a single complaint against her character. She supports her younger brother on her hourly wage. You attempted to destroy her entire life this afternoon, and I intend to find out why."
Victoria fell silent, her intense dark eyes flickering away toward the tall, frosted window overlooking the gardens. She pressed her painted lips into a thin line, stubbornly refusing to meet his authoritative gaze.
"This was never about a diamond necklace," Arthur continued, slowly walking around the desk to stand directly in her line of vision. "You wanted Elena dismissed immediately and disgraced. You wanted her out of this house before the board's seasonal audit on Monday. What did she see in the east wing, Victoria?"

Victoria took a slow, shallow breath, her manicured hands clenching into tight fists at her sides. "You are jumping to completely absurd conclusions, Arthur. I made a careless error in judgment, nothing more."
"Then you will sign a formal apology, and you will pay Elena six months of restitution," Arthur stated coldly. "Or I hand that clear video footage over to the authorities."
