Chapter 40: The Library Raid

The library was a ghost town at three in the morning, the air thick with the smell of old paper and dust. Elias and the girl moved through the stacks, seeking a specific, overlooked archive that might contain the original paper deeds of the academy’s founders—documents that could trace the money back to the illicit operations mentioned in the files. The girl felt the adrenaline rising, the familiar, sharp-edged focus that made her feel like a soldier again. They reached the basement floor, the security lights dimmed to a low, ominous red, and she knew they were not alone.

"Stay close," she whispered, her hands already searching for the improvised tools she’d learned to use in the academy’s dark halls. A figure emerged from the shadows—a man in a dark suit, his face obscured, but his posture radiating the cold, lethal intent of a professional. Elias acted without hesitation, lunging forward to distract the man, and for a terrifying moment, the girl felt the world tilt. She didn't let the fear take hold; she used the training she’d internalized, moving with a fluid, lethal grace she’d forgotten she possessed, forcing the man to the ground.

"Who sent you?" she demanded, her voice cold, hard, and devoid of any mercy. The man spat a name she didn't recognize, but it was enough to confirm her darkest suspicions: the board members were only the middle-men, and the real architect was someone far more dangerous. They took the deeds, leaving the man groaning on the cold floor, and disappeared into the night. The weight of the secret they carried was heavier than any medal, a burden that would change the trajectory of their lives forever.
