CHAPTER 2

The days turned into weeks,

and the autumn leaves fell,

covering the quiet streets.

Emily woke up early,

breathing in the cold air,

and she felt completely safe.

She walked into the kitchen,

making a warm cup of coffee,

while Lily was still sleeping.

The apartment was very small,

but it was filled with light,

and it belonged to them.

Natalie came over often,

bringing groceries and toys,

and they cooked dinner together.

Daniel was far away now,

living in his empty house,

and he was furious.

He stared at the court papers,

feeling a deep sense of anger,

and he blamed everyone else.

Patricia called him daily,

telling him to fight back,

but Daniel felt paralyzed.

He had lost control,

and that was his greatest fear,

which ate at his mind.

Emily walked Lily to school,

holding her small warm hand,

and the child was smiling.

There were no more tears,

and there were no stomach aches,

before the morning bell rang.

The teacher noticed the change,

writing a positive note home,

and Emily cried happy tears.

She framed the little note,

putting it on the yellow wall,

as a symbol of their victory.

The library job was peaceful,

allowing Emily to heal slowly,

and she loved the quiet rooms.

She organized the heavy books,

finding comfort in the routine,

and her heart grew stronger.

Dr Patel checked her heart,

smiling at the good results,

and reduced her medications.

The nightmare was fading away,

leaving behind a quiet peace,

that Emily fiercely protected.

She sat on the small balcony,

watching the stars appear,

and she knew she had won.

The fear was finally gone,

replaced by a steady calm,

and she closed her eyes.

She thought of the courtroom,

remembering the harsh lights,

and the cold wooden floor.

She remembered falling down,

feeling the sharp pain,

and the darkness closing in.

But then she remembered the voice,

calling for help loudly,

and demanding that she be saved.

She owed her new life to him,

and to the fair judge,

who saw through the lies.

Daniel tried to send gifts,

mailing them to the school,

but they were sent back.

He was losing his grip,

and Patricia was losing her mind,

pacing her expensive living room.

They were trapped in their anger,

while Emily was finally free,

and walking in the sunlight.

Lily drew a picture of a bird,

coloring it with bright blue,

and said it was her mother.

Emily hugged her tightly,

feeling the warmth of love,

and promised to always protect her.

The evening ended with a book,

read softly in the dim light,

and Lily drifted to sleep.

Emily locked the front door,

checking the deadbolt twice,

and smiled at the silence.

There was no shouting here,

and there were no broken plates,

only the sound of the wind.

She laid her head on the pillow,

feeling the soft cotton fabric,

and slept without any bad dreams.

The morning would come again,

May you like

bringing another peaceful day,

and Emily was entirely ready.
