CHAPTER 9

Summer arrived with a blazing heat,

making the city sidewalks shimmer brightly,

and Emily bought a small window fan.

She was halfway through her first semester,

getting excellent grades in all classes,

and feeling proud of her hard work.

Aaron took them to the beach one weekend,

driving his old truck down the highway,

and playing loud cheerful music.

Lily sat in the back seat happily,

singing along to the catchy tunes,

and wearing a bright yellow swimsuit.

They built a massive sandcastle together,

digging a deep moat around the walls,

and collecting shells to decorate the towers.

Aaron chased Lily into the crashing waves,

splashing cool water all over her,

and her laughter echoed down the beach.

Emily sat on a striped beach towel,

reading a book and soaking up the sun,

feeling completely relaxed and very calm.

She watched the two of them playing,

realizing they looked like a real family,

and the thought made her smile warmly.

Aaron walked back to the towel slowly,

shaking the water from his dark hair,

and sitting down right next to her.

He reached out and took her hand,

interlocking his strong fingers with hers,

and they watched the ocean waves crash.

He told her he was officially discharged,

leaving the military behind him now,

and looking for a permanent civilian job.

He said he wanted to stay right here,

in this city with her and Lily,

and he asked if that was okay.

Emily squeezed his hand very tightly,

telling him it was more than okay,

and she kissed him in the bright sunlight.

The drive home was quiet and peaceful,

with Lily falling asleep in the back,

exhausted from the long day of play.

When they returned to the small apartment,

Emily found a thick envelope in the mail,

sent from the family court system.

She opened it with slightly shaking hands,

reading the official legal documents inside,

and then she let out a huge breath.

Daniel's relocation was legally finalized,

and his parental rights were severely limited,

requiring years of therapy to even appeal.

He had essentially given up the fight,

moving on to a different state entirely,

and leaving them in total legal peace.

Emily filed the papers in her cabinet,

closing the metal drawer with a click,

and locking away her past for good.

She made a simple dinner of sandwiches,

eating at the table with Aaron and Lily,

and they talked about their upcoming week.

Lily asked if Aaron could come to career day,

wanting to show off her brave soldier friend,

and Aaron agreed with a huge proud smile.

The night settled softly over the city,

and Emily sat on the balcony alone,

looking through Lily's new telescope.

She found the bright North Star easily,

remembering how she used to feel so lost,

and how she had finally found her way.

She had been her own guiding light,

trusting her gut when everyone else doubted,

and refusing to let her spirit break.

Aaron stepped out onto the balcony,

wrapping a warm blanket around her shoulders,

and standing closely by her side.

He pointed to a different bright star,

telling her the name of the constellation,

and his voice was low and very soothing.

Emily leaned her head against his chest,

listening to his strong steady heartbeat,

and she knew she was exactly where she belonged.

The painful chapters of her life were closed,

and a beautiful new book was opening up,

filled with blank pages waiting to be written.

She was ready to write a happy ending,

May you like

one day and one single word at a time,

and she was not afraid of the dark anymore.
