CHAPTER 6

The judge scheduled an emergency hearing,
responding to the school incident,
and Emily wore her best gray suit.
She walked into the familiar building,
feeling a wave of old anxiety hit her,
but she pushed it down deep.
Aaron was waiting in the hallway,
standing tall in his uniform,
and he gave her an encouraging nod.
He was not needed to testify today,
but he came to show his support,
and Emily felt incredibly grateful.
Daniel arrived with his expensive lawyer,
looking tired and very angry,
and he glared at Aaron intensely.
The courtroom doors swung open wide,
and everyone took their assigned seats,
waiting for the judge to appear.
Judge Hanley walked in with a frown,
banging his wooden gavel hard,
and looking directly at Daniel.
He read the new police report aloud,
detailing the violation at the school,
and asked Daniel to explain himself.
Daniel claimed he just wanted to see Lily,
playing the role of a loving father,
and saying the rules were too strict.
Judge Hanley did not buy the act,
reminding Daniel of his past behavior,
and his history of manipulation.
He said court orders were not suggestions,
banging his hand on the high bench,
and his voice echoed in the room.
He suspended Daniel's visitation rights,
canceling the supervised meetings entirely,
until a full psychological review was done.
Daniel's face turned a deep bright red,
and he started to yell at the judge,
losing his carefully crafted composure.
He called Emily a terrible liar,
pointing his finger in her direction,
and screaming that she ruined his life.
Officer Miller stepped forward quickly,
grabbing Daniel by the strong arm,
and forcing him to sit back down.
The judge found him in contempt of court,
ordering him to spend the night in jail,
and imposing a heavy financial fine.
Emily watched as they took him away,
placing cold handcuffs on his wrists,
and leading him out the side door.
It was a shocking scene to witness,
but it proved what she had always known,
that Daniel was a dangerous man.
The judge looked at Emily softly,
telling her she was doing a good job,
and dismissing the court session.
Emily walked out into the bright hall,
taking a deep and shaky breath,
and Aaron placed a hand on her shoulder.
He told her it was finally over,
that Daniel had shown his true colors,
and that the court saw everything now.
Emily drove back to her apartment,
feeling a massive weight lift off her,
and she unlocked her front door.
Lily was playing with her dollhouse,
completely unaware of the courtroom drama,
and Emily joined her on the rug.
They played together for a long time,
creating happy stories for the dolls,
and laughing until their stomachs hurt.
The evening was quiet and very still,
with only the sound of the ticking clock,
and the distant hum of traffic.
Emily knew Daniel would be furious,
sitting in a cold jail cell tonight,
but she also knew he could not reach her.
She had built a fortress of truth,
using evidence and undeniable facts,
and it was stronger than his anger.
Patricia had been entirely silent lately,
likely warned by Daniel's expensive lawyer,
and the silence was a true blessing.
Emily went to sleep very easily,
dreaming of walking through a green forest,
with Lily holding her hand tightly.
The darkness was completely gone now,
May you like
and the morning would bring new light,
shining brightly on their small home.
