CHAPTER 13

The spring brought a sudden unexpected letter,

arriving in a plain white business envelope,

and bearing a return address from Ohio.

Emily opened it while drinking her coffee,

reading the messy handwriting on the page,

and her heart skipped a very small beat.

It was a letter from Daniel's new wife,

a woman named Sarah who sounded very scared,

and she was asking Emily for some help.

Sarah wrote that Daniel was acting strangely,

controlling her money and isolating her completely,

and she had found Emily's name in old files.

She asked if the terrible rumors were true,

if Daniel had really been abusive and cruel,

and she begged for an honest quick reply.

Emily sat at the kitchen table silently,

staring at the letter for a long time,

and feeling a wave of deep profound sadness.

Daniel had not changed his dark ways,

he had simply found a new silent victim,

and the cycle of abuse was repeating itself.

Aaron walked into the kitchen very quietly,

reading the letter over Emily's tense shoulder,

and he sighed heavily into the quiet room.

He told Emily she did not have to reply,

that it was not her responsibility anymore,

but Emily shook her head firmly no.

She knew exactly what Sarah was feeling,

the confusing terror and the paralyzing deep doubt,

and she could not leave her in the dark.

Emily pulled out a piece of clean paper,

writing a careful and honest response back,

and detailing the truth of her own escape.

She told Sarah she was not going crazy,

validating her fears and her anxious feelings,

and providing the numbers for national hotlines.

She told her to pack a secret bag,

to hide her important documents away safely,

and to leave before things escalated to violence.

Emily mailed the letter that very same afternoon,

dropping it into the blue postal box,

and praying that Sarah would find the courage.

It was a stark reminder of the past,

a ghost reaching out from a distant state,

but it did not break Emily's strong peace.

She had done what she could to help,

passing the torch of survival to another woman,

and now she had to let it go.

She focused on her final college exams,

studying late into the warm spring nights,

and graduating with highest honors in May.

Aaron and Lily cheered the loudest there,

watching her walk across the huge stage,

and accepting her diploma with a huge smile.

She applied for a job at the advocacy center,

interviewing with the director the following week,

and she was hired on the exact same day.

She became a full time crisis counselor,

sitting in a small brightly lit office,

and answering the phones with a steady voice.

She talked to women who were trembling,

guiding them through safety planning and escapes,

and attending court hearings by their sides.

She was the calm presence they desperately needed,

just like Aaron had been for her once,

and she found immense purpose in the work.

Every time she helped a woman break free,

she healed a little piece of her past,

and the dark shadows retreated even further.

Her life was a beautiful full circle now,

turning her greatest pain into her greatest power,

and shining a light for others to follow.

The letter from Ohio was never answered back,

but Emily checked the news online occasionally,

hoping Sarah had made it out completely safe.

She focused her energy on her own family,

May you like

loving Aaron and Lily with all her heart,

and cherishing the quiet safety of their home.
