CHAPTER 8

The transition to spring was beautiful,
melting the snow into rushing water,
and bringing green leaves to the trees.
Emily enrolled in community college,
taking night classes twice a week,
and Natalie babysat Lily during those hours.
She studied psychology and social work,
reading thick textbooks late at night,
and finding a deep passion for learning.
Aaron was a constant steady presence,
helping her study for big exams,
and bringing her coffee in the morning.
Their relationship grew very strong,
built on mutual respect and total trust,
and there were never any raised voices.
If they disagreed on a small thing,
they talked about it calmly and quietly,
and they always found a compromise.
Emily learned what love should feel like,
realizing it was not supposed to hurt,
and it was not supposed to be scary.
Love was supposed to be a safe harbor,
a place to rest your tired head,
and a pair of hands that caught you.
Lily celebrated her eighth birthday soon,
having a party at the local roller rink,
and inviting all her classmates to come.
She wore bright neon pink skates,
gliding across the shiny wooden floor,
and laughing as she fell down safely.
Aaron skated right beside her,
holding her hand to keep her steady,
and Emily took a hundred happy photos.
When it was time for the birthday cake,
Lily blew out all the candles quickly,
and made a secret wish with closed eyes.
She hugged Emily tightly around the waist,
saying it was her best birthday ever,
and Emily knew that was the truth.
There was no tension in the air today,
no waiting for Daniel to ruin the mood,
and no forced smiles for the camera.
It was just pure and simple joy,
filling the noisy colorful skating rink,
and making memories that would last forever.
After the party they went back home,
opening presents in the living room,
and Lily loved every single gift.
Aaron gave her a small telescope,
setting it up on the balcony outside,
so she could look at the bright stars.
He showed her how to focus the lens,
pointing out the different constellations,
and Lily was completely mesmerized by it.
Emily watched them from the doorway,
leaning against the frame with a smile,
and she felt a tear slip down her face.
It was a tear of profound gratitude,
thanking the universe for this second chance,
and for the strength she had found.
She had fought a very hard battle,
facing monsters in tailored suits,
and she had emerged victorious and whole.
Her heart was completely healed now,
beating with a strong and steady rhythm,
and the hospital visits were a distant memory.
She no longer felt dizzy or weak,
sleeping soundly through the entire night,
and waking up with energy and bright hope.
The next day at the library job,
she helped a woman find a resource book,
a book about leaving abusive situations safely.
Emily recognized the fear in her eyes,
the same fear she used to carry around,
and she spoke to the woman very softly.
She gave her a list of local shelters,
writing down Karen Fields phone number,
and telling the woman she was not alone.
The woman thanked her with a whisper,
putting the paper in her deep pocket,
and hurrying out the heavy front doors.
Emily knew she had found her true calling,
wanting to be the hand that reaches out,
and the voice that says I believe you.
She had survived the darkest deep valley,
May you like
and now she was climbing the high mountain,
ready to pull others up with her.
