CHAPTER 10
The new school year started quickly,
and Lily entered the third grade happily,
carrying a brand new purple backpack.
She was taller and much more confident,
raising her hand in class very often,
and making friends with incredible ease.
Emily got a promotion at the library,
becoming the head of the children's section,
and she organized weekly story times.
She loved reading books to the kids,
using funny voices for the different animals,
and watching their faces light up brightly.
Aaron found a job at the local hospital,
working as an emergency room manager,
and he was very good at his work.
He handled the stress with total calm,
just like he had done in the courtroom,
and his coworkers respected him deeply.
They celebrated his new job with dinner,
going to a fancy steakhouse downtown,
and toasting with glasses of champagne.
Emily wore a beautiful silver necklace,
a gift from Aaron for their anniversary,
and it rested gently against her collarbone.
Natalie joined them for the celebration,
bringing her new boyfriend along too,
and the table was full of loud laughter.
It felt completely normal and very right,
like a regular family having a regular night,
and Emily soaked in every single second.
She remembered the days of total isolation,
when Daniel would not let her see friends,
and Patricia would criticize her clothes.
Those days felt like a bad movie now,
starring a version of herself she barely knew,
and she was glad the movie was over.
She excused herself to use the restroom,
washing her hands in the warm water,
and looking at herself in the mirror.
She looked healthy and deeply rested,
with color in her cheeks and bright eyes,
and she smiled at her own reflection.
When she returned to the busy table,
Aaron pulled her chair out for her,
and kissed the top of her head softly.
The evening ended with a long walk,
strolling through the busy city park,
and enjoying the cool autumn breeze.
Lily called Emily the next afternoon,
using the school office telephone line,
and she sounded very excited and breathless.
She said she won the spelling bee,
beating all the kids in her entire grade,
and she wanted to celebrate with pizza.
Emily agreed instantly with a huge laugh,
ordering a large pepperoni pizza for dinner,
and buying a small balloon on the way home.
Lily was beaming with intense pride,
showing off her shiny blue ribbon,
and Emily pinned it to the corkboard.
They ate the hot pizza on the couch,
watching a funny cartoon on the television,
and talking about the hardest spelling words.
Aaron came over after his long shift,
bringing a pint of chocolate ice cream,
and congratulating Lily on her big win.
He high fived her with genuine excitement,
telling her she was the smartest kid around,
and Lily blushed with deep happiness.
The small apartment was full of love,
radiating from every single painted wall,
and Emily felt overwhelmed with gratitude.
She had fought so incredibly hard for this,
crawling through the mud and the dark,
to build this tiny little kingdom of peace.
And nobody could ever take it away,
because she held the keys to the castle,
and she had a fierce army by her side.
