CHAPTER 11

Winter returned with a freezing wind,

but Emily's home was warmer than ever,

decorated with bright sparkling holiday lights.

She baked sugar cookies with Lily constantly,

cutting them into the shapes of stars,

and frosting them with thick green icing.

Aaron helped them decorate the small tree,

lifting Lily up to place the top star,

and snapping a picture with his phone.

They drank warm cider with cinnamon sticks,

listening to classic holiday jazz music,

and sitting close together on the rug.

Emily received an email from her lawyer,

sending the final yearly case summary,

and there were no updates from Daniel.

He had missed all his required evaluations,

failing to show any interest in his child,

and the court had officially closed his file.

Emily deleted the email with a swift click,

not wanting his name in her inbox,

and she focused on the cookies instead.

She decided to volunteer at the shelter,

serving hot meals on Christmas Eve night,

and she brought Aaron and Lily along.

Karen Fields was there directing the crowds,

and she hugged Emily very tightly,

amazed at the incredible progress she saw.

Emily helped serve mashed potatoes and gravy,

smiling at the people waiting in line,

and feeling a deep sense of shared humanity.

She knew what it meant to be broken,

and she knew what it meant to be saved,

so she wanted to give that feeling back.

Lily handed out small candy canes happily,

wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas,

and spreading her innocent bright joy.

Aaron worked in the busy kitchen area,

washing the giant metal cooking pots,

and he looked over at Emily with pride.

They drove home late that cold night,

feeling exhausted but profoundly fulfilled,

and Lily fell asleep in the backseat.

Aaron carried her up the apartment stairs,

tucking her gently into her warm bed,

and kissing her forehead with tender care.

Emily watched from the hallway shadows,

realizing he was the father Lily deserved,

and her heart swelled to bursting point.

They sat on the couch in the dark,

illuminated only by the blinking tree lights,

and Aaron turned to look at her seriously.

He reached into his jacket pocket slowly,

pulling out a small black velvet box,

and Emily felt her breath catch suddenly.

He opened it to reveal a simple ring,

a delicate band with a single bright stone,

and he asked her to marry him.

He said he wanted to build a life,

protecting her and loving her every day,

and being a true family forever.

Emily did not hesitate for a second,

crying soft tears of absolute pure joy,

and she said yes multiple times loudly.

Aaron slipped the ring onto her finger,

fitting perfectly like it belonged right there,

and he pulled her into a deep kiss.

The nightmares of the past were dead,

buried under years of healing and deep love,

and a bright new dawn was breaking now.

They told Lily the news the next morning,

and she jumped up and down screaming,

asking if she could be the flower girl.

Emily promised her she would be the best,

hugging her daughter and her future husband,

and looking forward to their beautiful wedding.

The journey had been terrifying and long,

starting with a devastating collapse in court,

but it ended with a profound standing strength.

Emily Whitaker was no longer a victim,

May you like

she was a survivor and a fierce protector,

and she lived happily ever after indeed.
