Chapter 1: The Sound of a Heel

Marina had learned to stay silent.

Silence kept the peace. Silence protected the baby growing inside her. Silence helped her survive another day inside the sprawling mansion that had once felt like a dream.

But that afternoon, silence shattered.

Victor’s polished shoe came down hard on her bleeding hand.

“This house is mine!” he roared.

Pain shot through Marina’s body. She curled around her stomach instinctively, terrified more for her unborn child than for herself.

Victor leaned closer, his face twisted with rage. “You think you can threaten me with lawyers? With documents?”

Marina’s vision blurred. She had never threatened him.

She had only discovered something she was never supposed to find.

And now Victor was determined to make sure she never spoke about it.

Then the front door exploded open.
