Chapter 8 - The Refusal
"My mom told me never to talk to strangers," Lily said firmly, stepping back toward the school gates where a teacher was standing. Mr. Vance’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, revealing a flash of irritation. He bent down, lowering his voice so only she could hear. "Your mother owes a debt she can never repay, little girl. Tell her that time has run out. If she doesn't hand over the ledger by tomorrow night, I'll make sure neither of you ever sees the light of day again." He straightened up, turned on his heel, and disappeared into the crowded street.
