Chapter 7 - The Man in the Tailored Suit

The following afternoon, the man in the suit intercepted Lily near the entrance of her elementary school. He offered her a warm, practiced smile, holding out a small paper bag that smelled faintly of sweet cinnamon pastries. "Hello, Lily," he said, his voice smooth as silk. "My name is Mr. Vance. I’m a very old friend of your mother’s. She sent me to bring you a treat." Lily looked at the bag. Her stomach rumbled loudly, demanding to be fed. But then she remembered the harsh voice behind the door of Room 4B. She looked into Mr. Vance's eyes and saw no warmth there—only cold calculation.
